Arts@HSUHK presents “The Past and Presence of Naamyum (Southern Tone)”

HSUHK hosted the Arts@HSUHK event, “The Past and Presence of Naamyum (Southern Tone)” on 5 November 2025. Renowned artist Professor Yuen Siu-fai was invited to deliver a live demonstration of the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage item — the narrative singing art of Naamyum. Accompanied by live Chinese music, his performance revealed the unique charm of Guangdong’s traditional musical storytelling.

HSUHK hosts Arts@HSUHK “Play Reading X Multimedia”

HSUHK hosted the Arts@HSUHK event, “Play Reading X Multimedia”, today (2 April). This event showcased HSUHK students’ reinterpretation of the renowned musical Man of La Mancha through a play reading. A symposium held after the event further enriched the overall experience by inviting academics and audience members to embark on an exploration of dreams and reality.

Arts@HSUHK presents Passing Beyond Time: Chinese Shadow Puppetry

Arts@HSUHK presented the Passing beyond time: Chinese Shadow Puppetry by Shadow Puppet Master Li Jianxin of Sun Sun Arts Troupe on 24 September 2024 at the Auditorium. Master Li gave a live demonstration of the art of shadow puppetry which enfolded craft, sculpture, music, play, history, etc. The students and staff of HSUHK learned about the art from multiple perspectives and examined the exquisite craftmanship with great appreciation. The programme was supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

“Elegance of Ancient Chinese Dances” by HKDC @HSUHK

Arts@HSUHK held the premiere of a newly choreographed dance performance, Elegance of Ancient Chinese Dances, by the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) on 6 February 2024. The programme showcased signature pieces from the pre-Qin Period to Qing Dynasty, including Chinese aesthetics in the art of dancing, and traditional culture in rites, music, etiquette, costumes, poetry and songs. The HKDC dancers guided over 200 audience members through the performance with interactive elements as they displayed oriental aesthetics and the beauty of body movements through form, inspiration, and context.

Arts@HSUHK’s Workshop on Creativity, Stage Production and Performance

Following their performance “Diary VII. Let me tell you a story…” that interweaved light, shadow and dance at HSUHK’s College Assembly on 12 October, internationally renowned Hong Kong dancer, Mui Cheuk-yin, and stage lighting designer, Lee Chi-wai, were invited back to HSUHK by Arts@HSUHK to host a workshop for students who were interested in creative development, stage production and performance. During the workshop, Mui and Lee shared their creative processes and how the production was designed along with the ideas. Under the guidance of instructors, participants also tried to use lighting and other elements to create stage effects and explore different ways of expression.

Performance “Cantonese Opera Right or Wrong – Your Choice!” at HSUHK

Arts@HSUHK brought the drama Cantonese Opera Right or Wrong – Your Choice!  on campus on 10 October 2023. The drama, presented by One Table Two Chairs Charitable Foundation, brought out the aesthetics, artistic and moral values that are appreciated in Cantonese opera. They performed one of the classic scenes from You Long Xi Feng. Individual audience was invited to vote for a version of ending that he/she preferred. The students enjoyed the Cantonese-opera experience in this interactive and fun-filled programme. This programme was part of the Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme 2023 of the Audience Building Office of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble performs at HSUHK

Arts@HSUHK brought the musical theatre, Music at the Dai Pai Dong to campus on 19 September 2023. The programme introduced Lingnan music through the narration of local food culture at a Dai Pai Dong. The Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble played a “menu” of music pieces that delivered vivid Lingnan flavours through sound. Students enjoyed the performance during lunchtime. The programme was part of the Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme 2023 by the Audience Building Office of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Arts@HSUHK “Ukraine: A Love Story” Photography Exhibition

Arts@HSUHK hosted the photography exhibition ‘Ukraine: A Love Story’ at the G/F Gallery of Lee Quo Wei Academic Building, Yuen Campus, from 9 February to 30 March 2023. National Geographic award-winning photographer, Dominic Chiu, went to Ukraine to document the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia in May 2022. Speaking of his experience, he said “It was my first time working inside a war zone as a photographer, and to see what the war did to people living there was an experience I can hardly put into words”. He hopes that through his photos, viewers can get a glimpse into the horrors of war and more importantly, the love that the people in Ukraine shared in their darkest hour. Alongside presenting his stories of love and humanity in Ukraine’s war zones, he was also invited to share his work as a freelance photographer and financial services professional at the College Assembly on 9 February 2023.

Arts@HSUHK “Wanna Be A Drummer?!” Lunchtime Concert

Professional drummers from the Hong Kong International Drummer Festival were invited to perform on campus by Arts@HSUHK on 7 March 2023. Drummers Jeff Leung, Haru Lau and Bremen Cheung livened up the space with their immersive drumline performance and played pop songs that energised attendees on campus. The drummers also engaged the audience with interactive demonstrations and drumming games.

Arts@HSUHK brings Dance Theatre on Campus

Arts@HSUHK invited Siu Lung Fung Dance Theatre to present the performance “City Rumbles and Dance” on 11 November on campus. Students and staff were invited to feel the pulse of the city together. The dance performance was composed of nine scenes about the anecdotes of life in Hong Kong. The audience were led to feel those experiences that belonged only to this city.The performance was held on the M3 Podium where students were invited, amidst their busy campus life, to feel and think about the emotions and messages expressed. This programme was part of the Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme 2022 by the Audience Building Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Arts@HSUHK Afternoon Concerts

At the beginning of the new academic year, Arts@HSUHK brought afternoon live music concerts to students and staff members on campus. The music group Toolbox Percussion was invited to present two percussion music sessions at The Inspiring of Lee Shau Kee Complex. In addition to a series of beautiful music pieces, the group introduced percussion instruments and their characteristics. The concerts also featured an exhibition with digital games about music knowledge, composition and arrangement, adding fun to the leisurely afternoons. The programme was part of the Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme 2022 presented by the Audience Building Office of Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Arts@HSUHK Play-reading Programme 2021/22 – Performance of The Laramie Project

Arts@HSUHK launched the Play-Reading Programme in 2021/22, encouraging students to enhance their communication skills and expressive power through play-reading, while being inspired by the dramatic literature and developing their potentials in performing arts. The programme was supervised by its consultant, Professor Gilbert Fong, with Artistic Director of Pants Theatre Production Mr Wu Hoi-fai serving Director and Trainer. Due to the fifth wave of the epidemic, the commencement of the programme was postponed to April 2022. After a selection exercise, 10 students with a passion for the theatre from different programmes and years of study studied and selected the play together under the Director’s guidance. The final performance of The Laramie Project was held at Fung You King Hall of HSUHK on 22 July 2022. The Laramie Project was a classic of the documentary theatre, and the script has won many theatre awards. After months of training and rehearsal, the students not only acquired a good grasp of play-reading, script appreciation and character interpretation, but also established bonding and friendship in the process. The Echo of Nature – Exhibition on Japanese Pressed Flower Art by Dr Serina Ha

Arts@HSUHK presented ‘The Echo of Nature – Exhibition on Japanese Pressed Flower Art by Dr Serina Ha’ at the G/F Art Gallery of Lee Quo Wei Academic Building from 30 September to 30 October 2021. The opening reception of the exhibition was held on 29 September. Professor Gilbert Fong, Chairman of Arts@HSUHK Working Committee, delivered his welcome speech, and Dr Serina Ha introduced the exhibition and her art pieces. Guests included explorer Dr Rebecca Lee; Mr Salah Hamdan Alsaif, Consul General of the State of Kuwait for Hong Kong; Mr Boris Ezdrin, Vice Consul of the Russian Federation in HKSAR; Ms Ayu Saptaningtyas, Vice Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in HKSAR; and Hong Kong fencer Mr Ryan Choi. Pressed flower craft is the art of using dried and pressed flowers, petals, leaves and other organic materials and other botanical materials to create an entire picture from these natural elements by using a variety of pressing techniques. About 20 pieces of Dr Ha’s artwork were exhibited, including her award-winning works in international competitions. The exhibition attracted many visitors including students, staff and members of the public to appreciate Dr Ha’s exquisite artwork.

Asia Pacific Drummer Competition 2021 Awards Ceremony@HSUHK

Hong Kong International Drummer Festival and Arts@HSUHK presented the Asia Pacific Drummer Competition 2021 Awards Ceremony at HSUHK on 29 October 2021. The online competition attracted 122 contestant units from more than 20 cities in the region to share and exchange drumming techniques and crafts, and to compete for the awards. During the ceremony, award results were announced and presented to the winners in the different categories. Arts@HSUHK: “Move Within and Without” – Dance Performance by HKDC

Arts@HSUHK proudly presented the dance performance Move Within and Without by Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) at noon on the Mid-Autumn Festival Day. It was the premiere of this newly choreographed performance. The performance showed oriental aesthetics and the beauty of body movements through form, inspiration, and context. The team of HKDC dancers performed captivating moves and guided the audience through with interactive elements. About 200 students and staff members attended the show. They expressed much delight and affirmed their enhanced interest in dance as an art form.

Cohabitants of the Urban Jungle – Paintings by Human Ip

Hong Kong is a compact city where urban living and natural habitats exist side by side. The nature is within our easy reach; and wildlife does come to our urban daily. Arts@HSUHK was delighted to present the art exhibition Cohabitants of the Urban Jungle – Paintings by Human Ip. The art exhibition was held at the G/F lobby of Lee Quo Wei Academic Building, HSUHK from 16 March to 29 May 2021. It showcased about 20 watercolour paintings of Hong Kong wildlife by writer and artist Human Ip, who uses text and brushstrokes to express her admiration for the intriguing nature, drawing closer the relationship between human, fauna and flora in an urban setting.

Arts@HSUHK Online Workshops

Arts@HSUHK organised two workshops – the ‘Art of Chinese Tea Workshop’ in Nov/Dec 2020 and the ‘Japanese Pressed Flower Art Workshop’ in March 2021 amid the pandemic. The workshops aimed to keep the artistic vibes going in the HSUHK community.

Along with the narration of silk road stories, Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble played music from countries such as Korea, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Italy. Their performance took the audience to countries along the Maritime Silk Road – literally a musical and cultural tour in an hour. The programme was presented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition and Workshop

The art of Chinese calligraphy is long-standing and condenses the essence of Chinese unique culture and visual arts, having both practical and artistic values which help nourish our humanistic spirits. From 1 to 21 Mar, Arts@HSUHK hosted The Art of Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition in collaboration with China-Hong Kong Calligraphy Association at G/F and M/F of the University’s Lee Quo Wei Academic Building, displaying over 20 pieces of master work from contemporary calligraphers. The exhibition was sponsored by Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme.

Arts@HSUHK Brought on Campus “Music Atlas of Hong Kong” by Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble

Arts@HSUHK brought on campus the lunchtime concert “Music Atlas of Hong Kong” by Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble on 14 Nov 2018 at S H Ho Academic Building. The professional Chinese music troupe, together with the narrator, presented a “guided tour” that took the audience along the tramway to discover the cultural characteristics of different local districts. HSUHK students, staff and the public audience immersed themselves in Hong Kong’s past and present while listening to the selection of Chinese music pieces performed by the troupe. The programme was presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

The exhibition is sponsored by HSMC’s Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme, curated and organised in association with B Action Company Limited, and supported by Education Connect Limited. The opening ceremony held on 11 Oct 2018 (Thu) was officiated by Mr Chan Shing Wai, Assistant Director (Heritage and Museums), Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD); Dr Sin Wai Kin, President Simon S M Ho and Adjunct Professor and artist Zhang Xiaoyou.

Lunchtime Live Jazz

Arts at HSMC’s last event for the 2nd semester of 2017/18 was held on 24 and 26 Apr 2018 on G/F of S H Ho Academic Building (Block A).

Jazz Roaster (comprising Barry Lam [double bass player], Mark Leung [guitarist] and Felix Leung [drummer]) featuring Maggie Wong (vocalist) brought all-time favourites Take the A Train, Misty, My One and Only Love, Anthropology, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars, and One Note Samba, etc. to two groovy afternoons before the exam period. The musicians injected a new spark of life into the timeless pieces with their improvisations. The audience enjoyed the music as well as Barry’s amusing brief of the style and story of each song.

Arts at HSMC presents “CHANCES TO POSSIBILITIES” Exhibition on Japanese Pressed Flower Art by Dr Serina Ha Miu Yin from 9 to 30 Apr 2018 on G/F, Lee Quo Wei Academic Building. The opening reception of the exhibition with Dr Ha’s presence was held at 6 pm on 10 Apr 2018 (Tuesday). About 80 HSMC staff members and students as well as many of Dr Ha’s longtime friends and supporters gathered to celebrate her accomplishments. The opening reception was kicked off with HSMC Provost Gilbert Fong’s welcome remarks, followed by Dr Ha’s introduction of her floral art and Hong Kong explorer Dr Rebecca Lee Lok Sze’s congratulatory speech.

Flora and Fauna in the Urban Jungle – Paintings by Human Ip

Arts at HSMC presents “Flora and Fauna in the Urban Jungle – Paintings by Human Ip” from 6 to 28 March 2018 on M/F, Lee Quo Wei Academic Building. Human Ip is a writer and painter who also engages herself in nature-oriented work. Her water colour and lacquer paintings of Hong Kong native plants and animals are on exhibit now. These flora and fauna, some recorded in ancient literatures, form an integral part of the Hong Kong ecosystem.

Film Talk “Cinema of Occultism”

Arts at HSMC invited Hong Kong Film Critics Society to present a film talk on “Cinema of Occultism” on 16 Nov 2017. It was part of the “Cinema of Occultism” programme organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the HKSAR Government. The programme aimed to inspire local tertiary students to explore occultism via movies.

Wakayagi Ryu Konokai Japanese Traditional Dance Workshop

To broaden students’ experience in art appreciation, Arts at HSMC brought to the campus a Japanese traditional dance workshop on 23 Oct 2017.

Drama “Three Kingdoms”

Arts at HSMC presented “Three Kingdoms”, the second drama of “Cultural China” series by Hong Kong Theatre Works, on 9 October 2017. During the pre-show talk, Director Hardy Tsoi shared the story background, his inspirations and intention to interest people and help them understand history through drama.

《最後晚餐》

Arts at HSMC presented the award-winning dark comedy The Last Supper by Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (HKRep) at the Auditorium on 28 Apr 2017. The play drew an audience of over 160 guests, staff and students. To promote the play, Canteen Rendezvous at Block M offered “Pre-show Supper” with a special discount to the audience.

Beethoven Brillante 貝多芬逝世190周年紀念音樂會

Arts at HSMC brought on campus a thematically classical evening with “Beethoven Brillante—Commemoration of the 190th Anniversary of the Death of Beethoven”. The concert attracted an audience of over 160 guests, students and staff. The distinguished musicians included pianists Dr Karl Lo, Ms Henrika Wong and Ms Joycelyn Cheung, violinist Ms Alice Tang and cellist Mr Edgar Hung, who played Beethoven’s masterpieces and paid tribute to the great composer at the Auditorium on 11 April 2017.

The Delights of Wilderness — Watercolour paintings by Wu Shiu Ming

The art exhibition The Delights of Wilderness — Watercolour paintings by Wu Shiu Ming, presented by Arts at HSMC, is running till 20 Apr 2017 at the Exhibition Area of HSMC Library. Alongside the exhibition, a selection of Hong Kong renowned writer – Ms Wu Yin Ching’s publications are on display (Ms Wu Yin Ching is the daughter of the deceased artist Mr Wu Shiu Ming).

Lunchtime Live Jazz • JAZZ up life

Arts at HSMC will bring music and visual art programmes in this semester, adding an extra tint of artistic colour on our green campus. First comes Lunchtime Live Jazz by Angry Bird Trio featuring Billy Yeung. The Trio comprises Barry Lam (bass), Mark Leung (guitar) and Jose Leung (jazz vocalist) and they will jam with Billy Yeung, guest keyboardist, to put on all-time favourites such as Autumn Leaves, Take the A Train, Wave, Someday My Prince Will Come, Fly Me to the Moon…

Arts at HSMC presented the first show of the touring forum theatre – All About Family by Pants Theatre Production at the Auditorium on 1 November 2016. Arts at HSMC presented a drama adapted from Water Margin, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature, by Hong Kong Theatre Works. Mr Hardy Tsoi, Director and Playwright, gave a brief on the historical background of the play and talked about his inspiration to make this adaptation before the show.
