Arts at HSMC: Wakayagi Ryu Konokai Japanese Traditional Dance Workshop

23 October 2017

To broaden students’ experience in art appreciation, Arts at HSMC brought to the campus a Japanese traditional dance workshop on 23 Oct 2017.

The workshop started with a brief introduction of the history and background of Japanese Traditional Dance (Nihon Buyo) by master Chika Wakayagi (Chika), founder of Wakayagi Ryu Konokai. Chika demonstrated dance moves that expressed romance, natural scenery and the daily life of traditional Japanese folks, etc. Chika also demonstrated how to wear a yukata with a student participant as the model. In the interactive session, participants learned the rituals of starting a dance, using fans to dance and mimicking different expressions, etc. The programme culminated in Chika’s graceful dance performance. The dance workshop introduced traditional Japanese performing arts and offered a fun and enriching experience to about 60 HSMC teachers and students.
