Wall Street legend Warren Buffet once said, “Never invest in a business you cannot understand.” Having been in the translation industry for more than three decades, I would say, “You cannot translate something you don’t understand.” This is especially true for financial translation to which background knowledge is essential. Just knowing such technical terms as prospectus, position statement, and income statement in Chinese won’t suffice, financial translators should be subject matter experts. In Hong Kong, an international financial centre, having a good command of Chinese and English as well as being equipped with economic and financial knowledge certainly makes you more competitive in the job market. In this seminar, I would share with you my experience in integrating language proficiency with knowledge of subject matter.
