22 June 2018

“HR & Talent Dialogues: Multi-generation in the Workplace” was the first of its kind HR conference organised by the Executive Development Centre of HSMC (HSMC-EDC). The event was co-organised by the Department of Management, the Student Affairs Office and the Research Institute for Business; and supported by the Advancement and Alumni Affairs Office, five Schools of the College, media partner CTgoodjobs, professional bodies and commercial entities. The conference received over 350 registrations from corporate heads of different sectors, HR professionals, new-joiners in the workplace, as well as HSMC students and alumni.

Various “multi-generation communication and management” issues were covered including challenges and strategies of multi-generation communications at the workplace; and the ways different generations can adopt to facilitate operation and demonstrate their strengths in the fast-moving digital era, with an aim to build a harmonious team.

In his welcome remarks, President Simon S M Ho expressed his gratitude to all the participants for the mutual learning opportunity. He also introduced the development and objectives of HSMC. Three panel discussion sessions were held at the conference. The first session, with the theme “How can we create a harmonious cross gen culture and its impact”, was hosted by Dr Victor Lau, Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Management of HSMC. Three guest speakers were invited: Mr Sunny Wong, Adjunct Professor from the Department of Management of HSMC and Executive Director of Tibet Water Resources Limited; Ms Scarlett Tsoi, Adjunct Lecturer of HSMC-EDC and Counsellor; and Mr Jordan Cheung, Deputy General Manager, Global Marketing of Hong Kong Airlines Limited. The speakers shared how to gain a better understanding of different generations’ ways of thinking and their needs in order to achieve effective communications.

The second session, with the theme “Best practices on integrating new gen culture”, was hosted by Dr Jimmy Jim, Head of Global Markets of ICBC (Asia) Limited. Four HR professionals joined the discussion: Mr Teddy Liu, General Manager, Corporate & Talent Development of New World Development Company Limited; Ms Eva Lo, Director of Knowledge Management of Cordis Hong Kong; Ms Maria Hui, Director, Human Resources of Microsoft Hong Kong Limited; and Ms Janet Poon, General Manager, Human Resources of Hang Lung Properties Limited. Practical tips on promoting effective multi-generation integration were provided.

The last panel adopted the theme “What does the new gen want?”. It was hosted by Dr Henry Shiu, Committee Member of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and Honorary Guest Lecturer of HSMC-EDC. Three HSMC graduating students and alumni joined this session: Mr Ronald Lee (BBA, Year 4); Mr Alan Wu, Account Manager of ICG; and Ms Elaine Shiu, Founder & Chief Brand Officer of Ejj Holding Limited. They shared their ways of thinking and the rationales behind their thoughts as members of the younger generations.

The conference concluded with a sharing titled “Implications and what’s next” by Ms Joanna Kwok, Director of HSMC-EDC.
