Honorary Doctor Peter Wong shares insights for thriving in globalised economy

21 March 2024

Dr Peter Wong Tung-shun, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited and recipient of the 2023 Honorary Doctorate from HSUHK, delivered an enlightening lecture titled “Opportunities and Challenges for Younger Generations amidst the Globalised Economy” as part of the “Visionary Wisdom – HSUHK Honorary Doctorate Lecture Series”.

Dr Wong shared a personal anecdote about his parents, who migrated to Hong Kong as refugees from Shanghai and faced financial hardships. Despite their difficult circumstances, his father always prioritised education, instilling in him the value of lifelong learning.

To equip the younger generation for future challenges, Dr Wong passionately encouraged the audience to approach every aspect of their lives with an open mindset and a global perspective. He emphasised the importance of engaging with diverse stakeholders, embracing new technologies, and cultivating a broad understanding of the world to seize opportunities in an ever-changing landscape.

Drawing from his extensive experience in the banking industry spanning over four decades, Dr Wong inspired the audience to confront challenges with composure and tackle problems from a macro perspective. When asked about navigating the current global political and economic turmoil, he candidly acknowledged the limited control individuals have over such circumstances, advising them to focus on “managing what you can manage.” Dr Wong also hoped that young individuals would diligently pursue their goals, persevere in the face of setbacks, and establish strong interpersonal relationships and connections.
