The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held its Convocation on 3 September 2026 to welcome over 2,500 new undergraduate students and 70 international exchange students for the 2026-27 academic year. On the same day, the University also held its Postgraduate Orientation Day, welcoming more than 1,200 new postgraduate students, a record high that reflects the growing appeal of its postgraduate programmes and the University’s continued development in teaching, research and internationalisation.
In his address at the Convocation, Professor Joshua Mok, President of HSUHK, encouraged new undergraduate students to explore widely and learn with curiosity and care, embrace artificial intelligence while remaining anchored to critical thinking and human compassion. He said, “Engaging with peers and scholars from different countries and cultural backgrounds will expose you to new ideas and help you gain greater cross-cultural understanding,” adding that these experiences “will expand your knowledge, broaden your horizons, cultivate your creativity, empathy and leadership, and prepare you to become a responsible global citizen.”
President Mok expressed that the new students are joining the University at an exciting time as HSUHK has grown rapidly in academic quality, research impact and international outlook over the years. He said, “We have seen a remarkable 24% year-on-year increase in the number of HSUHK World’s Top Scholars. This prestigious standing is determined through rigorous, multi-dimensional criteria that aggregate the world’s most competitive academic indices. This significant growth trajectory demonstrates that HSUHK is not only recruiting world-class talent, but also actively cultivating an environment where research excellence thrives, solidifying our position as a rapidly emerging hub for global research impact on top of quality teaching and learning.”
Javis Suen, President of the HSUHK Students’ Union, said in his speech that HSUHK adopts the “Liberal + Professional” education model, which inspires students not only to acquire academic knowledge, but also to think critically, act ethically and live purposefully. He urged new students to make the most of their university life by actively participating in classes and campus activities, taking on leadership roles, rising to challenges, and learning through both success and failure.
Under the theme “Leading the Future, Beyond Imagination”, the Postgraduate Orientation Day featured presentations by both internal and external speakers on a wide range of topics related to study and research. These included academic development, research support, digital learning, telephone scam prevention, and regulations concerning controlled items and customs requirements, helping new students settle into postgraduate life and make a smooth start to their studies.
