“Along with the President” Series #8: Hiking + Kite-flying at Tai Hang Tun

3 February 2018

The “Along with the President” hiking and kite-flying was held on the chilly morning of 3 Feb 2018 (Sat) which recorded only 8 °C in Tai Leng Tung, the highest point of the hike. President Simon S M Ho, 12 students and four colleagues from the President’s Office and the PE Unit of Student Affairs Office gathered at Diamond Hill MTR Station and set off to Tai Au Mun on Clear Water Bay Road.

The team started at Tai Au Mun, walked along Lung Ha Wan Road, and then took the steps down to see an ancient rock carving at the edge of the sea, which is a declared monument estimated to be carved by the early inhabitants about 3,000 years ago. The team then reached the entrance of Lung Ha Wan Country Trail, from where the hike became steeper and rocky. They then reached Tai Leng Tung, the highest point of the hike, where they tasted the breeze of the wind and enjoyed the grand vista of Clear Water Bay and the waves crashing against rocks along the seashore. After a short break, the team moved all the way down the trail towards Tai Hang Tun, a very popular kite-flying area. Despite the cold weather, students had much fun getting their kites soared high in the sky and also got anxious when their kites got falling and stuck in the trees. The outing was completed with a simple noodle lunch at an outdoor tuck shop at Tai Au Mun.

Throughout the journey, students shared with President Ho their lives at the Residential Colleges and discussed issues such as career planning and future development of HSMC, which enhanced understandings between President Ho and students. Students were also eager to join further activities and interact with the President in the future.

Lofty but down to earth; life can be very gratifying with walks in the nature or even a simple hot meal!
