    Jason Cheung (Class of 2014)

    The 4-year school life at HSMC was delightful and enlightening. I have gained not only profound knowledge in translation, but also an inspired mind always in search of new experience. One of the best lessons I took from the professors was that the road to knowledge never ends.

    In the summer sandwiched between the second and third year, I engaged in a English– Putonghua interpretation training at Beijing Foreign Studies University in a 6-week departmental exchange programme. Afterwards, I backpacked around Europe with my friends for two and a half months. These experiences left me with a better understanding of myself and a clear career choice.

    I am currently a flight attendant at Cathay Pacific Airways. I have to put myself into different shoes. Besides serving as a steward, I act as a paramedic to provide timely assistance to passengers struck by a sudden heart-attack or vertigo; an interpreter to render captains’ impromptu announcements into Cantonese and Putonghua; a public relations officer to communicate with passengers and work with colleagues of different nationalities.

    I would like to extend my gratitude to the Department of Translation for the knowledge and the humble yet confident self with which I graduated.

    I would say my life in HSMC is memorable, comprehensive and fruitful. Thanks to the teaching in HSMC that equipped me with basic knowledge and practical skills, I could quickly fit in the real-life situation while my co-workers need not take care of me. The internship experiences allowed me to apply my knowledge and have a deep understanding about the industry. These were truly inspiring as the experiences helped me to shape my career choice after my graduation.

    Currently, I am working as a Web Editor at Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). My major duty is to write and edit the product specification for display on hktdc.com. Besides, I have to conduct survey and carry out promotional work at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The most interesting part is the interaction with clients. They are from all parts of the world so we will talk in any common language we can speak. I enjoy a lot the chitchat time because the conversation always brings me to the other side of the world.

    As I was studying Translation with Business in HSMC, I gained versatile skills and comprehensive knowledge in both translation and business, which is highly related to my current job. My academic background, which is a combination of languages and business, allows me to easily adapt to my work, deliver nicely-written product specifications for each product and promote our clients’ products effectively. To the current HSMC students, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

    I am so glad that I chose HSMC four years ago and I am particularly grateful to be graduated from the School of Translation. My bachelor years at this college were happy and fruitful. I chose to study Translation with Business because I wanted to enhance my knowledge in linguistics and brush up my language to a professional level. This course is exactly what I expected and it helped me achieve what I wanted.

    I like the whole teaching system at HSMC because it is like a big family. Students are allowed to talk to their professors and tutors whenever they feel like and the teaching staff have done an excellent job in supporting students’ development throughout their study at HSMC. I also felt that the well-planned internship requirement structure can help students to lay a solid foundation and become a professional translator with valuable experience. Putting what I have acquired in lessons into practical skill sets has been an enormous success for my career.

    Given the opportunity to be arranged by the School in my second year to participate in the seminar of the Nobel Prize Winner Gao Xingjian as a simultaneous interpreter, I’ve been working as a translator and an interpreter since then. Now I am a professional individual translator and interpreter for many multinational corporations, acting as their chief translator and interpreter at many large-scaled and sometimes overseas conferences, exhibitions, events and meetings.

    My bachelor course at HSMC has encouraged me to explore more in the legal translation field. With some experience acting as a paraprofessional for top-tier international law firms after I gained the knowledge of this field at HSMC, I am currently doing a Master’s degree in Language and Law at City University of Hong Kong to pursue higher and I am hoping to become a professional legal translator.

    Stella Kwok (Class of 2014)

    It has been almost half a year since my graduation from HSMC. I still savour the moments we shuffled between blocks, rushing for classes.

    Compared with other tertiary institutions, HSMC is relatively new. As one of the graduates from its first few batches of students, who grew up with HSMC and recently began a new journey in the society, I am filled with mixed feelings.

    The academic staff at HSMC have been devoting their time and effort to teaching and securing valuable internship opportunities. This is the distinction between HSMC and other tertiary institutions.

    The BTB programme, with a practical curriculum, provides us with necessary knowledge to gain a foothold in the society. We are well primed to put what we have learnt into practice. My current job requires frequent business trips to the Mainland. Thanks to the effort I spent on passing the National Putonghua Proficiency Test, one of the graduation requirements, I experience little language barrier working in the Mainland. Being able to communicate in Putonghua has helped me overcome difficulties encountered at work and allowed me to develop effective liaison with mainland corporations.
