Sentimental Grandparent Scheme – Connecting Love across Generations

25 April 2016

The Student Affairs Office of Hang Seng Management College has recruited 13 students to participate in Sentimental Grandparent Scheme 2015-2016. After the briefing and training sessions organised by SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home for the Aged and Student Affairs Office, each resident at the elderly home was paired up with a group of two volunteers who paid regular visits and will compile a “Life Story Book” for their elderly friend. Through listening to the elderly friends’ “life journey” in the past four months, students have built friendship with the elderly and learnt from their experiences in life which can hardly be taught in the classroom.

The sharing dinner for the Scheme participants was held at S H Ho College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 25 April 2016. Guests included Dr T L Ho, Governor of The S H Ho Foundation, cooperating organisations, secondary students and parents. We were honoured to have Dr T L Ho to present certificates to our students.

Atthe sharing dinner, Cheng Tsz Yan, Year 1 student and Shum King Hang, Year 2 student of Bachelor of Business Administration in Supply Chain Management shared their learning and experience. Cheng Tsz Yan mentioned that she learnt wisdom of life when talking to her elderly friend. Shum King Hang mentioned that this Scheme reminded him to treasure the moments with his grandparents.

Sentimental Grandparent Scheme is organised by The Hong Kong Society for the Aged and sponsored by The S H Ho Foundation. The scheme aims to promote cross-generational harmony and to enhance the awareness of our future pillars of the society about the living of the elderly. Participants are from Hang Seng Management College, The University of Hong Kong and S H Ho College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
