8 February 2021
Dr Cheung King Man, Lecturer of the School of Translation and Foreign Languages, delivered an online talk entitled ‘Financial + Translation’ on 8 February 2021.
With illustration of real-life examples, Dr Cheung emphasised that to understand and translate texts in the fields of economics and finance, students must have ample knowledge in these disciplines. Dr Cheung alsoexplained that instead of interpreting financial texts literally, technical terms and proper nouns should be correctly translated so as to avoid misunderstanding. He also emphasised the importance of paying extra attention to figures during translation.
Dr Cheung concluded the talk by reiterating the parallel importance of good command of language and extra-linguistic knowledge. He encouraged students to acquire knowledge of different disciplines by reading broadly and cultivating a better sense of public affairs at both regional and global levels.
