SCOM Talk Series #49

March 23, 2023

On 23 March 2023, the School of Communication hosted the SCOM Talk Series 49 with Mr Yeung Wing Cheung, Senior Manager of Production Department of TVB Co., Ltd.: Information, Culture and Education. During the Talk, Mr Yeung shared his extensive experience that spans over 40 years in television informatives, cultural, educational, as well as documentary programs. Mr Yeung highlighted the revamped info-tainment programme ‘Scoop’, which has become an avenue to help ordinary citizens solve day-to-day. Citizens say “Report to Scoop”, and this has become a catchphrase in the city. ‘Scoop’ covers a variety of media concerns and social responsibility issues and has achieved 23.7 points (1.52 million viewers), the highest cross-platform live broadcast ratings, ranking it first in the ratings list.

Mr Yeung said “As many people report their cases, the hour and a half long ‘Scoop’ cannot meet the needs of all citizens, therefore, ‘Scoopplus.TVB’ was conceived and established.” Through its extended airtime, audience grievances can get more exposure and attract more attention. He pointed out that people need to vent out their emotions, which if suppressed, could result in social outrage. He also mentioned that he will consider collaborations with others, such as KOLs, who are interested in making video content, giving them an opportunity to showcase their productions.

For students who are interested in entering the media industry, Mr Yeung said that the most important thing is to foster interest in social affairs and human relationships and that there must be enthusiasm and persistence in students’ work. Unsurprisingly, students are most interested in joining the “Travel Program”, as everyone wants to combine work with leisure.
