Scholars discuss governance, society and resilience at international symposium

27 October 2026

The Graduate School of HSUHK, the College of Social Sciences at National Taiwan University, the Taiwan Society Resilience Research Center, and the Consortium for Social Change, Well-being, and Social Policy Studies co-hosted the hybrid International Symposium on Governance, Society, and Resilience: Critical Reflections from East Asia on 16 October 2026. Scholars and practitioners examined how East Asian societies can strengthen resilience amid challenges involving fiscal policy, migration, care and emerging artificial intelligence (AI).

In his opening remarks, HSUHK President Professor Joshua Mok emphasised the importance of cross-border academic collaboration in cultivating caring professionals and advancing impactful, compassionate research. He said HSUHK’s “Liberal + Professional” education model equips scholars and students to address complex regional challenges, including economic disruption, AI-related risks and ageing societies, with practical impact.

The symposium examined how East Asian societies can build resilience through effective crisis governance, responsible digital innovation and institutions that promote well-being. Presentations highlighted the importance of public trust, robust evidence and adaptive policy, while exploring how AI and other digital technologies are reshaping education, consumer behaviour and political trust. Discussions on fiscal reform, ageing, care and rural communities further underscored the role of inclusive policies, universities and community partnerships in translating research into practical support.
