The University Collection – “Objects of Interest” and acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist Wang Yi’s solo exhibition “The Stars Are Not Afraid to Appear Like Fireflies” officially opened at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong – Foundation Gallery on 27 March. The University Collection showcases selected donated items from HSUHK’s holdings, while Wang Yi’s exhibition is jointly presented by HSUHK and ArtNext and co-curated by Ms Mianco Wong and Ms Xie Xiaomin.
The opening ceremony of the two exhibitions were officiated by Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of the Foundation Management Committee; Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK; Professor Douglas So, Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee of HKSAR; Professor Desmond Hui, Chairman of the Working Group on Foundation Gallery Curation; Ms Mianco Wong, Founder of ArtNext and co-curator; and Ms Xie Xiaomin, co-curator and representative of the artist.
The University Collection “Objects of Interest” is built around the concept of the Cabinet of Curiosities (Wunderkammer), featuring selected donations to HSUHK. The Collection invited students and staff to reinterpret these objects through their respective disciplines, adding new layers of meaning. The Feature Exhibition “The Stars Are Not Afraid to Appear Like Fireflies” presents Wang Yi’s works, including Reflection of Shadow and Ksana. Wang adopts geometric forms and translucent pigment layers through glazing techniques to explore the individual-social relationship via light and structure. Though distinct in style, the two exhibitions resonate with each other, creating a rich dialogue between private collections and public art, and between historical artefacts and contemporary inquiry.
The HSUHK – Foundation Gallery offers 150 square metres of versatile space in the Creative Humanities Hub. As a flagship facility in the building, it enhances visitors’ cultural and artistic experience through quality exhibitions while supporting the teaching and development of HSUHK’s Master of Arts in Art Business and related programmes.
