The second G20 Summit Simulation at HSUHK was completed on 4 Apr 2019. The activity was co-organised by the Provost’s Office and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, in association with the School of Business, School of Communication, School of Decision Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Science and School of Translation. It was a University-wide inter-programme activity that spanned two months from Feb to Apr 2019. The activity culminated in the Summit Simulation held on 4 Apr 2019.

More than 100 HSUHK students from different undergraduate programmes participated in the simulation to play the roles of G20 leaders (20 member countries) to deal with global issues. Each team represented a G20 member country and students played the roles of Head of State, Foreign Minister, Finance Minister and Environment Minister. Through the G20 activities, students gained a good understanding of international affairs and developed skills in multilateral negotiations, public speaking, team building strategies and diplomacy.

Summit Simulation (4 Apr 2019)

The G20 Summit Simulation was held on 4 Apr 2019. The 20 teams representing the G20 member countries gathered to discuss global issues and negotiated for a joint communique. A simulated press conference was held after the joint communique was announced.

Sherpa Meeting (21 Mar 2019)

The 20 teams started to discuss various global issues at the designated online discussion platform at Moodle since mid-Feb 2019. On 21 Mar 2019, all team members attended the Sherpa Meeting to get themselves “in-role” in preparation for the Summit Simulation in April. Multilateral negotiation took place to iron out differences among the G20 members on issues such as border and refugee crisis, inequality in trade and solutions to climate change, etc.

Briefing Sessions and others

To familiarise the Faculty Advisers and the student participants with the G20 simulation processes, two briefings were organised for respective parties on 22 Nov 2018 and 14 Feb 2019. Informal gatherings of Faculty Advisers were also scheduled between major events to provide teachers with necessary support.
