16 March 2024

HSUHK’s Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) co-organised “The Transformation of East Asian Welfare States in the Post COVID 19 Era: Challenges, Opportunities and Futures” Symposium with Lingnan University (LU) and National Taiwan University (NTU) in March 2024. The two-day symposium was held at NTU, and attended by speakers and participants from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

HSUHK scholars presented papers across various issues. Dr Chan Chi-kit, Associate Professor of School of Communication, shared his observations about media narratives surrounding the post-COVID Chinese economy, while Dr Rami Chan, Assistant Professor of Department of Social Science (SSC), discussed people’s post-COVID motivations for emigration. Dr Kwong Ying-Ho, Assistant Professor of SSC, compared how several Asian countries utilised contact tracing technology during the pandemic, while Dr Gary Tang and Dr Eva Hung, Associate Professors from SSC, discussed the effect of undermining people’s perception of work precarity on their neoliberal orientation.

HSUHK, LU and NTU also launched the new “Inter-university Consortium for Social Change, Wellbeing and Social Policy Studies” to promote regional and international comparative research on social development and social policy in East Asia.
