HSMC Consul General Series – Public Lecture by Consul General of Indonesia: Language, Culture and Opportunities for Hong Kong Students

18 April 2018

HSMC Consul General Series, co-organised by Provost’s Office and the School of Translation, invited Mr Tri Tharyat, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia (HKSAR & Macao SAR) to deliver a talk at HSMC on 18 Apr 2018 to introduce his country, its language and its culture.

Indonesia’s population comprises over 300 ethnicities who speak more than 700 dialects. Mr Tharyat introduced to the audience Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of Indonesia, and encouraged them to learn it since its pronunciation and grammar are simple and easy to follow. Besides, it is widely used around the world.

Mr Tharyat also pinpointed different opportunities offered by Indonesia. He quoted GO-JEK, a mobile application developed after considering the unique environment of Indonesia, which offers various one-stop services such as point-to-point commuting and food ordering to the large consumer population there. He said GO-JEK was a good example showing not only business opportunities, but also the way people’s livelihood can be improved through information technology. Mr Tharyat encouraged students to nurture a creative mindset, to innovate and contribute to the global community.
