HSUHK Receives HK$20 Million from Chairman of Henderson Land Group Dr Martin Lee for Construction of Creative Humanities Hub and Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab and Establishment of Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Award

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has received a magnanimous donation of HK$20 million from Dr Martin Lee Ka-shing through the Lee Shau Kee Foundation (the Foundation) in support of its campus and student development. A cheque presentation ceremony was held on 25 August 2023 with the presence of Dr Martin Lee, Chairman of Henderson Land Group; Dr Colin Lam, Vice Chairman of Henderson Land Group; and Mrs Cathy Chui Lee, alongside representatives from HSUHK including Dr Patrick Poon, Chairman of HSUHK Fundraising and Donation Committee, and HSUHK – Foundation Management Committee; Professor Simon S M Ho, President of the University; and Dr Tom Fong, Vice-President (Organisational Development).

Dr Martin Lee and Henderson Land Group have long valued the growth and development of local youth, committed to fostering innovation and creativity. At the ceremony, Dr Martin Lee said, “Innovation has always been at the heart of Henderson Land, and young people are the future of Hong Kong. This is why we have remained steadfast in our support for our young leaders, striving to help them unleash creativity, cultivate innovative ideas and adapt to the global trends in digital technology. My donation to HSUHK for the construction of a new academic building and the establishment of a student fund was born out of my hope to provide students with ample space where they can develop and harness their talent. Young people, I reckon, are filled with infinite possibilities and innovative ideas that will lead the way for the city’s sustained development. Henderson Land will continue to embody its people-centric approach, offering opportunities and space to nurture youth and propel innovation.”

In showing appreciation on behalf of HSUHK, Professor Ho said, “Dr Martin Lee is a prominent and respected business leader. His unwavering belief in equipping young individuals to face the challenges of today’s fast-paced environment and encouraging them to explore the world to further broaden their horizons, is truly remarkable. Dr Lee’s generous contribution to HSUHK will inspire and motivate the next generation of leaders.”

This donation will support the construction of the Creative Humanities Hub (the Hub), which is expected to be completed in late 2023. The Hub is a part of the University’s ongoing efforts to enhance its creative humanities education to cater to the increase in student numbers and the growing demand for additional teaching and learning facilities. A multi-purpose digital studio in the Hub has been named the “Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab” in recognition of Dr Lee’s support to equip students with state-of-the-art skills and ensure that students can embrace the newest digital technologies.

The donation will also help set up three student funds, namely, the Martin Ka Shing Lee Scholarship for Exchange and Global Internship Programme, the Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Award, and the Martin Ka Shing Lee Student Financial Aid Scheme. The new funds will help fulfil HSUHK’s vision to support its students through a range of activities, as well as financial assistance.
