“Naamyum” is a form of Cantonese narrative singing that originated in Guangdong. It was inscribed onto the third batch of the “List of the Representative Items of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2021, and on the first “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong” in 2017. As a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s popular culture in the 1940s and 1950s, its lyrics reflected the social realities of the time, offering a vivid glimpse into the daily lives, customs, and cultural practices of past generations.
Arts@HSUHK proudly presents “The Past and Presence of Naamyum (Southern Sound)”. This captivating Cantonese narrative singing tradition will be performed by Naamyum maestro Professor Yuen Siu-fai, and a talented ensemble of Chinese instrumentalists. Ms Musette Tsang, Creative Director of One Table Two Chairs, will serve as the storyteller, engaging the audience with lively and interactive narration to guide you through the fascinating world of Naamyum.
A must-see for lovers of culture and artistic traditions!
