Module Description
This Module is designed to provide both theoretical basis and practical instruction to effective public speaking. Through instruction and practice, students are expected to develop the basic understanding and confidence to speak in public. The Module discusses the audience awareness in selecting topics, organising speech content, the language required, verbal and non-verbal presentation skills as well as the effective delivery by means of visual aids. Other areas to be covered include: support of speeches with credible research, strategic and creative language use, effective listening and delivery skills, and common types of public speeches.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. select a topic and related material that engage the audience;

  2. organise the material for a speech;

  3. use effective verbal and non-verbal communicative techniques; and

  4. ask and answer spontaneous follow-up questions.
