Module Description
This module is designed to develop the English writing skills required in English writing and translating. It introduces the concepts of comparative rhetoric and enables students to apply the skills to writing and translation tasks. Through intensively focused critical readings of a wide variety of texts in English, students learn to build up an extensive lexical and rhetorical repertoire. Students will also learn to expand and apply their active vocabulary through working on lexical analysis projects, written and oral in-class exercises, and a final, group presentation.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. expand their active English vocabulary;

  2. recognize rhetorical devices in English, and interpret and evaluate their effect on the inference of meaning;

  3. compile word-books using thesaurus-like categories;

  4. apply these resources in writing and translation tasks.
