Module Description
This module explores the differences between source-text and target-text cultures. It studies cultural issues encountered in the process of translation with special focus on the relation between culture and translation, as well as on the role culture plays in cross-cultural communication. Topics such as cultural gaps, cultural differences and cultural barriers between Chinese and English cultures are discussed.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. read and think culturally, critically, creatively and communicatively;


  2. identify cultural elements and problems;


  3. develop a stronger cultural sensitivity and awareness to the nuances of languages and to its ideological, political and philosophical implications;


  4. describe the relation between culture and translation; and


  5. adopt appropriate translation strategies to overcome cultural problems.
