Module Description
This module explores the linguistic differences and similarities between Chinese and English. It aims to provide students with the theoretical and methodological tools needed to reinforce their linguistic and textual competence in the languages involved and make adequate progress along the translation process. Emphasis is put on phrase and clause structure, discourse structure, word order and semantic-syntactic interface in both languages.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. understand the significance of linguistic knowledge as it affects English-Chinese / Chinese-English translation and interpreting;


  2. identify the linguistic and stylistic features of Chinese and English;


  3. analyse critically the syntactic structures and functions of Chinese and English;


  4. adopt a contrastive approach to systematically analyse and overcome practical linguistic problems in translation and interpreting; and


  5. acquire independently more linguistic knowledge of Chinese and English.
