Module Description
This module provides a broad introductory survey of the key concepts and theories in translation studies. It comprises (a) a theoretical segment on the different ways of conceptualising and studying translation, (b) a historical segment on the changing views of translation and (c) a series of case studies highlighting particular topics and issues. A wide variety of text types is analysed.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. develop an appreciation of translation as a cultural force and as a theoretical and practical issue;


  2. acquire a sound grasp of key concepts and practices related to translation and its history;


  3. develop an ability to view translation from different vantage points;


  4. critique translations between English and Chinese; and


  5. apply translation theories to translation and interpreting practices.
