This module provides practices in translating a variety of text types in both languages. It aims to enhance students’ awareness of the differences and similarities between Chinese and English and to develop their ability to identify and analyse problems and difficulties encountered in the process of translating. Students also learn to formulate appropriate translation strategies in accordance with the purpose of translation.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. identify the language characteristics of specific text types through textual analysis;
   
   


2. predict and identify potential difficulties in translation;
   
   


3. formulate appropriate translation strategies in accordance with the purpose of translation;
   
   


4. produce an adequate translation of the source text by working through a number of drafts; and
   
   


5. locate and use reference tools related to their translation tasks.
