Module Description
This module introduces students to the major ethical theories and moral philosophy in Chinese and Western traditions, for instance, Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, Virtue ethics and Confucian ethics. It examines a range of ethical issues in today’s society, such as abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, cloning, animal rights and sexuality morality. Students learn to analyse and evaluate the relevant arguments through the use of critical thinking skills and sound ethical reasoning. It helps students develop the moral reasoning ability and establish their own moral belief and stance, which integrates the theories they learn with the daily life challenges.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. describe the nature, methods and theories of ethics and moral philosophy;

  2. explain and evaluate various theories of ethics;

  3. identify and criticize key ethical issues;

  4. develop their own ethical theories and answer to ethical questions;

  5. engage in moral debate in a rational manner.
