Module Description
This module introduces students to the basic concepts, theories, themes and interpretive strategies commonly employed in cultural studies. Emphasis is on interdisciplinary approaches to exploring how cultural artifacts are produced, shaped, distributed, consumed in diverse ways. Through discussion, research, and writing, students will investigate these varied dimensions of culture and learn to understand them in their broader social, aesthetic, ethical, and political contexts.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and theories in the field of culture studies;


  2. identify and explain with examples the major issues such as identity, sex, ethnicity in cultural studies;

  3. apply critical analyses on the ideology of mass culture as an essential part of cultural politics; and

  4. describe the major themes of Chinese cultural studies in Hong Kong.
