The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) welcomed Dr Roy Chung, an Honorary Doctor at HSUHK and a distinguished Hong Kong industrialist, to deliver a lecture under the “Visionary Wisdom: Honorary Doctorate Lecture Series” on 10 April 2026. The insightful lecture, titled “From Industry to Responsibility: The Story of an Industrialist”, explored the evolution of Hong Kong’s industrial development, weaving together historical shifts, industrial transformation, technological advancement, and entrepreneurial responsibility. The lecture was moderated by Dr Chan Chi-kit, Director of the Institute for Youth Sustainability Leadership and Associate Professor at the School of Communication, HSUHK.
Drawing on decades of industrial experience, Dr Chung reflected on the city’s early manufacturing-based development, highlighting the golden era of “Made in Hong Kong” and the dedication of a pioneering generation. Regarding China’s reform and opening-up, he shared how Hong Kong industrialists—among the first pioneers to expand northward—seized historical opportunities to drive corporate transformation, leading enterprises to move beyond traditional OEM manufacturing towards research and development, innovation, and brand enhancement. He also drew on practical experience in both the Chinese Mainland and overseas markets to analyse cross-regional business strategies, market differences, and the distinctive strengths of Hong Kong entrepreneurs.
Addressing the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the reshaping of the global industrial landscape, Dr Chung discussed the profound impact of automation and technological innovation on manufacturing and society. He examined the challenges and controversies arising from these advances and proposed new educational directions for nurturing talent in the modern era.
Emphasising that business operations should uphold the principle of “taking from society and giving back to society”, Dr Chung illustrated modern corporate social responsibility and ESG principles through his own practice, elucidating how corporate profitability and social contribution can mutually reinforce one another.
