Supplemental Instruction Programme


Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer assisted academic programme to support students in their academic performance in accounting subjects. It offers a number of regular out-of-class sessions to improve student’s academic performance and retention rate. It is the 2nd year of the SI Programme for students who took ACC2001 in semester 1 and ACC2002 in semester 2.

Objectives:

For mentee:

• To be a cooperative learning model designed to enhance students’ understanding of course materials;

• To improve their learning, thinking, communication and interpersonal skills (e.g. problem-solving strategies, course language skills);

• To help them become more independent and proactive learners;

• To improve the quality of students in general;

• To enhance newcomers’ learning outcomes.

For mentor:

• To refresh their own knowledge of what they studied earlier as an SI leader;

• To benefit SI leaders doing the coaching;

• To develop a cooperative learning culture within students of the Department of Accountancy.

Duration & Format:

The year-long (2 semesters); One/two hours a week for 9 weeks in a semester; starting from week 3 to week 12; Groups of 4 to 5 students.

Requirements as a SI Leader:

• Year 3 students (Accounting Major) who performed well in the department’s ACC2001 & ACC2002 courses are selected to fill the role of SI leaders.

• An SI Leader could logon to set up a class and students would be able to register to the respective classes, and there is no need to involve administrative staff.

Requirements as an SI student:

• Open to BBA/BTB/SCM year 2 students through online add-drop system (Week 1 – 4).

• Enrolled students pay HK$100 ‘Caution Money’ by cheque per course which can be refunded if attendance is 80% or above upon the completion of exit surveys.

• Students will be in the waiting list if they are not successfully enrolled.

Awards to SI Leaders:

• The ceremony will be held and certificates will be presented to SI leaders.

• ECA hours will be counted (if available).
