The 3rd Colloquium (2015/16)

Topic: The History Curriculum and Liberal Education: Reflections of an Apprentice
Speaker: Professor Cheng Wah Kwan, History Department, Mills College
Date: 23 March 2016 (Wednesday)

About the speaker:

Born and raised in Hong Kong and a graduate of HKU, Professor Wah K. Cheng received his PhD in history at the University of Chicago (1989) and MA in history at the University of Wisconsin at Madison (1983). He currently teaches Asian history and culture at Mills College, a historic liberal arts college for women founded in 1852, in Oakland, California. A firm believer in student-centered education, Professor Cheng is a strong advocate of study abroad and international exchanges. He chaired the Study Abroad Committee from 2009 to 2012, during which time he led the efforts in broadening high-quality exchange affiliations with institutions and programs in Europe and China. In addition to teaching, Professor Cheng has also been an engaged participant in faculty governance at Mills, including serving as Head of the History Department and Social Sciences Division Representative to the Faculty Executive Committee (similar to the faculty senate at larger universities). He was and still is the only Asian-American faculty elected as Faculty Convenor.
