To meet growing learning needs and to provide an advanced and comfortable environment for teaching and research, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has built the Creative Humanities Hub (the Hub). The Hub’s opening ceremony was held on 20 March 2024, and was officiated by Ms Diana Cesar, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of the Council, Ar Martin Tam, Governor and Chairman of Steering Committee on Campus Expansion, and Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK.

In her speech, Ms Diana Cesar described the opening of the Creative Humanities Hub as a milestone for HSUHK, noting that it reflects the University’s active efforts to keep up with modern developments, and shows the University’s determination and enthusiasm to transform HSUHK into an excellent institution with a unique vision and perspective. “Humanities” is at the core of the HSUHK education, while “creativity” serves as the driving force for social progress. The Creative Humanities Hub combines these two elements to provide students with a top-notch environment to learn, explore, and apply their skills and knowledge, preparing them for their future careers and professional avenues.

President Simon Ho said that the University has always kept up with the times and is committed to nurturing talent to meet the needs of society. “Art is the carrier of the humanistic spirit. The cultural and creative industries are also being given more prominence and are actively being promoted by the Central and Hong Kong governments in recent years. To plan for the long term and take the responsibility of promoting the development of education in Hong Kong, HSUHK started the construction of the Creative Humanities Hub at the end of 2021, aiming to cultivate more innovative talent with an international perspective.” President Ho expressed his gratitude for the generous donations the University has received from the community, which has enabled HSUHK’s continuous success, and demonstrated everyone’s trust, affirmation, and encouragement towards the University.

The Creative Humanities Hub is a new building with sustainability-conscious construction. Located between the oldest section of the campus and the more recent developments, the Hub connects “the old with the new” in a physical and a metaphorical sense.  With a gross floor area of approximately 3,000 square metres, the Creative Humanities Hub houses a Gallery, the Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab, the Multimedia Commons, and a Lecture Hall, facilities to be equipped with cutting-edge lighting and sound system, animation, computer graphics, and video editing capabilities.

Prior to its completion, the Hub was awarded the Provisional Platinum rating of BEAM Plus New Buildings V2.0 certification by the Hong Kong Green Building Council in December 2023. The Project also won the Gold Award at the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors’ QS Awards (Innovation). From its building design to its construction, green features have been incorporated in every aspect to reduce carbon footprint, such as high efficiency energy and water facilities, eco-friendly construction materials, and integrated design with the support of Building Information Modelling (BIM).  Photovoltaic panels installed on the rooftop serve as an alternative electricity power supply for general lighting and power within the building.
