6 October 2026

The School of Communication (SCOM) hosted “Al Creativity, Ethics, and Interdisciplinarity: A Symposium on Empowering Arts and Culture Communication through Generative AI” from 2–3 October. More than 200 scholars, practitioners, and industry experts from universities, cultural institutions and creative industries across Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland and overseas, joined the hybrid event to examine the opportunities and challenges generative AI brings to arts and cultural communication.

In his opening remarks, Professor David Tse, Acting Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research), noted that generative AI is reshaping how culture is created, understood and communicated, while also raising new ethical and creative challenges.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of SCOM, said the symposium reflected the School’s commitment to advancing teaching and research in arts and cultural communication, while contributing to Hong Kong’s development as an international centre for cultural exchange.

Professor Andrés Lucero, Associate Professor of Interaction Design at Aalto University, highlighted AI’s role as a creative collaborator rather than a substitute for human creativity. Professor Chen Changfeng, Dean of the School of International Communication at Jinan University and Professor at Tsinghua University, discussed how generative AI is reshaping artistic creation and cultural communication.

Discussions covered creative ethics, copyright, educational transformations, and cultural governance, underscoring the need for closer collaboration among academia, industry, and the cultural sector.

Over 200 scholars, practitioners, and industry experts attend the hybrid symposium to examine the opportunities and challenges generative AI brings to arts and cultural communication.
