Professor Joshua Mok, who assumed office as President of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) on 1 September, unveiled today the University’s “SHAPE for Excellence” framework, a landmark initiative that sets out HSUHK’s strategic directions for future development and strengthen its aspiration to become a leading private university in Asia.
The “SHAPE for Excellence” framework embodies HSUHK’s distinctive “Liberal + Professional” education model through five interconnected priorities and guides the University in nurturing knowledgeable, adaptable and caring graduates:
S — Supporting Student Development: Place students at the centre of the University experience through holistic education, personalised support, experiential learning and mentorship.
H — Heightening Impactful Research: Advance rigorous, relevant research and research-informed teaching that address real-world challenges and create meaningful impact.
A — Advancing University Position: Strengthen HSUHK’s standing and contribution to society through academic excellence, purposeful partnerships, innovation and international engagement.
P — Promoting Inclusive Governance: Foster trust, transparency, shared ownership and meaningful dialogue across our University community.
E — Expanding Beyond Boundaries: Connect students and colleagues with wider communities of learning, research and innovation through global partnerships and engagement with the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
To translate this framework into immediate action, HSUHK will focus on four key strategic areas:
Institutional Advancement and Community Engagement: Deepen relationships with alumni, industry, professional bodies, donors and community partners to create mutual value and broaden HSUHK’s contribution to society.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Cultivate creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration and the responsible application of knowledge, supporting students and colleagues in turning ideas into solutions.
International and Regional Engagement: Expand strategic partnerships and mobility opportunities, strengthen our connections with the Greater Bay Area and the Chinese Mainland, and extend HSUHK’s global reach.
Campus Facility Enhancement and Multiple Learning Sites: Develop flexible, technology-enabled and student-centred environments that support growth while providing a coherent University experience.
President Mok said, “As higher education undergoes significant changes driven by technological innovation, demographic trends and global competition for talent, HSUHK must continue to evolve while creating more opportunities and hope for our students while enhancing Hong Kong’s position as an international education hub. My vision is for HSUHK to excel as a leading private university in Asia, distinguished by excellent student learning, impactful research and purposeful engagement with society. Over the next five years, we will consolidate this leadership position, nurturing compassionate professionals who possess both the skillset and the drive to lead positive change.”
