HSMC Sports Invitation Game 2016

4 September 2016

The 2nd HSMC Sports Invitation Game has been completed after 4 weeks’ competition. This year, a total of twelve institutions participated, including Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE), Centennial College, Chu Hai College of Higher Education (Chu Hai), The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), Hang Seng Management College (HSMC), HKU SPACE Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College (HPSHCC), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Lingnan University (LU), Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi), The Open University of Hong Kong (OU), Tung Wah College (TW), and Hong Kong Shue Yan University (SYU).

Sixty-four entries competed enthusiastically in badminton, basketball and volleyball. The first to kick off were the badminton tournaments.Thirty-two entries representing seven institutions competed in four categories. The HSMC badminton team made good use of the home advantage. After four days of vigorous matches, the team came first in men’s singles, women’s singles and men’s double. Full team members came to support each player during the games, showing high morale and team spirit. All institutions put emphasis not only on skills and techniques, but also the sense of belonging and positive attitudes.

The HSMC men’s basketball team came head to head with Chu Hai College of Higher Education in the finals, fighting for second runner-up. The opposing team played with fast tempo and a tight defence. Having fallen behind 3 quarters in a row, the HSMC team stayed focus, and unremittingly-worked on their offence and defence. In the last quarter, with four three-pointer and six free throws, they managed to turn the game around. With just 2 minutes to go, the team made a fourth-quarter comeback, beat the Chu Hai basketball team by 12 points, and secured the bronze medal. The captain of the team contributed to the game by scoring 27 points in total.

The HSMC women’s basketball team competed against The Education University of Hong Kong for the champion in thefinals. The first half of the game was a cliffhanger as the scores were very close. During the second half, the opposing team mainly scored by mid-range jumper paired with a full-court press defence, making it difficult to attack. The HSMC team persevered, and had some success with their offence during the last quarter, giving out a good assist and shooting to make a comeback. However the EdUHK team was very strong and won by 13 points. HSMC took the second place.

Th evolleyball matches took place in the final week. The HSMC men’s volleyball team got to the semi-finals,but missed the top three. On the other hand, the HSMC women’s volleyball team came first in the division after a winning streak. They managed to take the 3rd place after an exciting game against the THEi team.

The HSMC Invitation Game, hosted by the Student Affairs Office of Hang Seng Management College, aimed to provide an opportunity for athletes to communicate, as well as a competitive platform for students to learn about the art and spirit of sportsmanship.

The game this year was a great success, with the full support from the College. Special thanks to all the institutions for participating, as well as all the professional referees from different sports associations. Congratulations once again to all of the winners.
