The School of Translation and Foreign Languages (STFL) conducted an online talk entitled ‘A Brief Introduction to the Procedure for Buddhist Scripture Translation in Ancient China’ on 7 January 2021.
With reference to historical documents, Buddhist texts and archaeological findings, Dr Siu Sai Yau, Assistant Professor of the STFL, introduced the process of Buddhist scriptures translation in ancient China and explained how Buddhist translators back then translated Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit into Chinese without the aid of electronic tools.
Dr Siu shared the story of Tang Sanzang and revealed that the translation of Buddhist texts back then was actually collaborated by translators. During the talk, different versions of printed Heart Sutra were shown, which aroused interest of the audience and prompted a lively discussion among them.
