HSUHK President inspires freshmen with diverse learning and self-exploration at Convocation

4 September 2025

The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held its Convocation on campus today to welcome over 2,200 undergraduate students and 50 exchange students to the 2025-26 academic year.

In his speech, Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK, shared that in the VUCA era –– characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity –– the world is undergoing major global transitions. Faced with geopolitical tensions, aging populations, economic structural changes, widening wealth gaps, growing concerns over climate and environmental sustainability, and the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, students should prepare themselves for a dynamic world.

President Ho shared, “As AI continues to evolve and reshape workplaces, many existing jobs would be replaced by technology, while countless new opportunities in areas that we might not yet have imagined, especially those that require more unstructured judgement, personalised attention and original creativity, will emerge. In the future, it seems unlikely that you will stay within the same profession or sector for your entire life.  Therefore, you should equip yourself to face the future with adaptability and flexibility by acquiring proper values, attitudes and transferable competencies.”

President Ho further stressed that university education goes far beyond acquiring knowledge and technical abilities, or preparing for employment. It is also a journey of self-discovery and building own core values – values such as respect, integrity, diligence, responsibility, compassion, perseverance and unity. He encouraged student to take part in various learning opportunities to discover their passions, define their values and grow into the person they find meanings and fulfilment.

Johnny Chong, President of the HSUHK Students’ Union, shared in his address that every new student will encounter their own crossroads during their university journey. Emphasising knowledge will serve as their “compass”. Johnny encouraged students to build a strong foundation through their studies and break out of their comfort zones to explore their potential. He also advised students to actively participate in student organisations, competitions and events, embracing the unknown and seizing every opportunity to prepare for a future full of promise and potential.

On the same day, HSUHK also held its orientation for postgraduate students, welcoming over 760 new students to its postgraduate programmes. Under the theme “Leading the Future, Beyond Imagination”, the event featured presentations by both internal and external guests. Topics included advice on turning pressure into motivation, protecting personal data, staying vigilant against phone scams, career support, and an introduction to HSUHK’s sports teams, events and activities.
