3 June 2025
The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held its Fifth Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony on campus on 3 June 2025, conferring degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa upon four outstanding individuals: distinguished scholar in psychology Professor Fanny Cheung Mui-ching (張妙清); renowned industrialist Dr Roy Chung Chi-ping (鍾志平); internationally acclaimed performing artiste Mr Michael Hui Koon-man (許冠文); and world prominent economist Professor Zhang Weiying (張維迎). Their remarkable accomplishments in their professional fields have made exceptional contributions to society and the University. The Ceremony was officiated by Ms Diana Cesar, Chairman of the HSUHK Board of Governors, and Dr the Hon Moses Cheng Mo-chi, Chairman of the HSUHK Council.
In his opening address, Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK, congratulated the four Honorary Doctorate recipients and described them as role models for HSUHK’s staff, students and alumni. He expressed confidence that the recipients’ achievements would inspire the University community to continue leveraging its distinct “Liberal + Professional” educational model, nurturing talent equipped with critical thinking, innovative minds, caring attitude, moral values, and social responsibility, to collectively create a better and more sustainable world. President Ho stated: “Their journeys inspire us not only to pursue excellence, but also to build a world where compassion and moral courage light the way. They also remind us that progress is made by people who have the courage and the determination to lead with purpose.”
Professor Zhang Weiying spoke on behalf of the four Honorary Doctorate recipients. He remarked that HSUHK serves as an example of entrepreneurial creation and commended the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership of the University’s founder, as well as President Simon Ho’s steadfast commitment to advancing HSUHK. He encouraged the University community by saying “To be an entrepreneurial person, imagination is essential. Imagination is essential because the future is not only uncertain but actually indeterminate. Indeterminacy means that history is not predetermined. What kind of future we will live in depends at least partially upon what choices we make today and tomorrow. It is imagination that guides the choice of entrepreneurs.” Professor Zhang also emphasised the responsibility borne by the Honorary Doctors to support the University’s development through diverse means, thereby infusing momentum into HSUHK’s future.
