HSUHK hosts Hong Kong Hakka & Punti’s Band Weaving Workshop Preserving Intangible Cultural Heritage and Appreciating Local Traditions

The S H Ho Wellness College and the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) co-organised the “Hong Kong Hakka & Punti’s Band Weaving Workshop” to celebrate the craft. Led by Ms Gladys Chiu, an inheritor of patterned band weaving skills, the workshop introduced students to the history, cultural significance, techniques, and tools of the cherished craft.

“In the resource-scarce past century, women in Hong Kong’s walled villages hand-wove their own intricate bands to adorn their everyday attire,” shared Ms Chiu. Through the hands-on workshop, students used delicate threads as fine as hair to weave unique, patterned flower bands, and connected with a tradition passed down through generations, exploring the wisdom and cultural spirit of the Hakka and Punti communities.

Through such initiatives, HSUHK is dedicated to preserving local culture, fostering a deeper appreciation for local traditions, and enriching students’ experiences with meaningful, hands-on learning.

Students experience Hong Kong's traditional craftsmanship through the workshop.
