Module Description
This module introduces the basic principles of computer systems. The module is divided into three parts. Part one introduces the concepts of computer organisation and computer architecture. Part two deals with computer arithmetic, and basic Boolean algebra and logic. Part three discusses operating systems, with hands-on introductions to Unix and Linux systems. Overall, the module serves as an introductory module for first-year computing students.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • understand modern computer system organization;

  • understand computer arithmetic and logic and their importance in computer systems;

  • understand the types and functionalities of operating systems and identify the services they provide;

  • write Unix and Linux shell scripts to solve problems in real-life applications.
