To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) hosted a traditional starfruit-shaped lantern-making workshop today (24 September), led by renowned paper-crafting master, Mr Au Yeung Ping-chi, owner of the traditional paper effigies shop, Bo Wah Effigies. Students learnt about the craft’s cultural significance and its connection to festive customs, as well as the techniques and care involved in making the lanterns.

Using bamboo splints, students first built the lantern frames before decorating them with coloured cellophane. Through the crafting process, they created distinctive starfruit-shaped lanterns of their own while gaining a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship behind his festive tradition.

The event was part of the “Liberal Arts@HSUHK: Chinese Culture Promotion Programme”, which deepens students’ understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture through interactive and experiential activities. HSUHK will continue to organise cultural activities that provide students with opportunities to engage with traditional crafts, appreciate their cultural significance and explore their relevance in contemporary life.
