The Department of Chinese at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) organised a Chinese Tiger-head Shoe Keychain Workshop yesterday (17 September), giving students the opportunity to create their own tiger-head shoe keychains, symbols of peace, safety and good fortune, while discovering the cultural significance and traditional craftsmanship of this unique heritage art.
Students learnt basic stitching and sewing techniques and created their own keychains under the instructor’s guidance. The hands-on activity deepened their understanding of the cultural significance, history and craftsmanship associated with the traditional tiger-head shoe.
The workshop was led by Ms Miru Wong, the third-generation successor of Sindart, one of Hong Kong’s few remaining handmade embroidered shoe shops. Established in 1958, Sindart has specialised in traditional Chinese embroidered shoes for nearly 70 years. Growing up in the family business, Ms Wong has dedicated herself to preserving this traditional craft while incorporating contemporary elements into traditional designs.
The event formed part of the “Liberal Arts@HSUHK: Chinese Culture Promotion Programme”, which aims to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of traditional Chinese culture through interactive and experiential activities.
