The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with property developer Wang On Properties (WOP) to launch the “HSUHK Erudite House”, a pioneering student accommodation initiative founded on the principles of co-design, joint operation, and complementary strengths. The project will comprise 121 residential units, accommodating nearly 300 student residents, and is expected to be completed and commence operations in August 2027.
Unlike conventional leasing arrangements, HSUHK will lease an entire 22-storey residential building on 18 Ting Yip Street in Ngau Tau Kok from Wang On Properties. Under this arrangement, HSUHK will secure the naming rights and play an active role in the planning, design, and fit-out processes, ensuring that the facilities fully align with students’ needs. In addition to providing residential units for student accommodation, the project incorporates retail spaces on the lower floors. The residence is strategically located just a 5-minute walk from Ngau Tau Kok MTR Station and is served by multiple direct bus routes, offering excellent connectivity and an estimated commute of around 30 minutes to the HSUHK campus.
Against the backdrop of the Government’s relaxation of admission quotas for undergraduate students from the Chinese Mainland, Macao and Taiwan, HSUHK’s student population has grown steadily. Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK, noted that this purpose-built accommodation directly addresses the rising demand for student housing driven by the increasing number of undergraduate students, while also providing long-term support for the University’s strategic expansion and development.
Mr Tang Ho Hong, Chief Executive Officer of Wang On Properties, stated that following the leasing project with HSUHK at the Sunny House Kai Tak last year, WOP is delighted to collaborate once again with HSUHK and to pioneer an entirely new mode of partnership. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the advancement of tertiary education in Hong Kong. In addition to consistently delivering high-quality residential properties, Wang On Properties has engaged the University’s team from the design stage to collaboratively create a more student-centric living environment. Upon completion, the Sunny House management team will be primarily responsible for property and facility management, while the HSUHK team for student management and education. Both parties will work together to provide opportunities for social activities and professional development. It is believed that this innovative model of university-industry collaboration will serve as an exemplary benchmark for the development of tertiary education in Hong Kong, while more effectively addressing the demand for student accommodation.
President Ho further highlighted that the residence will be supported by an on-site team of University staff, who will offer pastoral care and student support services to student residents. The University’s Student Affairs Office will facilitate a smooth transition and quicker integration into university life for new students. Thoughtfully designed to balance comfort and functionality, the residence will feature a range of communal facilities, including a fitness room, a dance studio, meeting rooms, and shared social areas, providing students with a high-quality and holistic living and learning environment.
