Patrick S C Poon Amity College students secure first runner-up in Gerontechnology Design Competition

22 January 2026

Students Fang Wing-san and Cao Bingrui from the Patrick S C Poon Amity College at HSUHK claimed the first runner-up position in the “3 Assistive Devices for Dementia” Design Competition. The competition forms part of the Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place Project, organised by the Institute of Policy Studies at Lingnan University. This achievement marks the second consecutive year that residents from the Patrick S C Poon Amity College have earned recognition in this competition.

The winning entry, an innovative “Brainwave-Sensing Headset”, leverages electroencephalography (EEG) biofeedback technology to continuously monitor brain activity patterns. This enables early detection of subtle abnormalities linked to mild cognitive impairment or the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, enabling family members and healthcare professionals to intervene promptly.

Beyond monitoring, the headset offers a transformative solution for elderly individuals facing mobility limitations or challenges in verbal communication. By detecting imagined actions through brain signals, users can trigger simple commands and facilitate more independent and effective interaction with caregivers.
