Investigative journalism is one of the most demanding areas of journalism, but also one with a growing body of specialist techniques and practitioners. This module aims to provide students with essential journalistic skills and the rigorous, in-depth and advanced research and investigation skills required to produce original and exclusive stories. Students will learn from case studies of complex and high profile investigations and acquire techniques of investigative reporting, such that they can plan, research and write an investigative feature of public concern or in the public interest.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. understand the brief history and current trends of in-depth and investigative journalism;


  2. identify and illustrate the characteristics of the major types of investigative reporting;


  3. manage information through sourcing in preparation and command the writing techniques for in-depth investigative reporting;


  4. discuss the ethical issues in contemporary investigative journalism; and


  5. produce in-depth and investigative assignments for print and television media use.
