This module is designed to provide students with a framework for studying the roles and functions of money, banking and financial markets in an economy. In addition to the functions of central banks and the conduct of monetary policies, students are provided with the knowledge to understand the working and the regulation of the banking industry. Furthermore, basic theories underlying money demand and money supply will also be introduced.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. describe the role of money in the economy;

  2. explain the meaning of interest rates;

  3. recognise the development of financial systems and banking institutions;

  4. explain the bank management and supervision;

  5. identify the roles of a central bank;

  6. explain the money supply and demand; and

  7. apply basic monetary theories and evaluate the conduct of monetary policies in practice.
