What is GELCS? 

GELCS is an English degree that breaks free from the constraints of period and geography, studying English in a global context as a global language. It helps you to read across cultures so you can speak to the world. 

It is a cultural studies degree that teaches you the literature of the elite as well as popular culture. Our programme teaches you to work across boundaries of class and background.

环球英语文学及文化研究文学硕士课程突破时空和地域界限，在世界框架下专门研究环球语言—英语。此硕士课程能让你有机会看透不同文化，联通世界。我们研究的范围包罗万有，由传统文学批评和文化研究，到数位人文学和生态批评亦有所涉猎。我们将老师的专业知识带进课堂，与学生一同探索新领域，利用电影、戏剧、数码媒体、诗歌和散文等作为讨论个案。

Why should I take this programme? 

If you are fascinated by literature and culture in English, but don’t want a traditional English MA, you should take GELCS. You want to discover English as a global language, reading literature and engaging in culture from Asia to the Americas. 

You want to take your English, and your understanding of literature and culture to the next level, and a course in professional English might give you a specialist vocabulary, but it won’t help you to communicate in a way that convinces or moves people. 

GELCS oers modules that will give you a grounding in World Literature, World Englishes, advanced literary and cultural theories, and research methods. It also offers unique elective modules that address the great issues of our age, including digitization, global warming, and the impact of economics on our lives and cultures. 

This is an MA like no other. We are proud to offer you such an innovative programme, and look forward to

All students take 3 core modules plus 4 or 5 electives from either GELCS or the area of drama and 
performance studies. This includes the opportunity to take a Capstone Project.

1) A Bachelor’s degree with liberal arts or humanities components from a recognised university, or 
equivalent, AND

2) Fullled the English Language Requirements by

a) Completion of a degree from a tertiary institution or programme where the medium of instruction is 
English; OR

• TOEFL 托福: 550 (paper-based 纸笔考试) / 79 (internet-based 网上考试)
