To echo its ‘Liberal + Professional’ education model, HSUHK adopts a unique residential college system to connect residential life with learning. Offering undergraduate students a different growth experience from that of traditional dormitories or halls, it aims to further enhance their communication skills, team spirit, self-management ability and community engagement. President Simon S M Ho believes that the residential college concept is significant in that it personifies the implementation of liberal arts education. “A lot of universities around the world emphasise too much research and publications, without paying much attention to the cultivation of undergraduates’ core competencies such as critical thinking, interpersonal communication, care for humanity, and social responsibility. Their students and teachers also tend to have a relatively distant relationship. The Residential Colleges (RCs) are a highly-integrated learning community that combines residential life, classroom learning, tutorials, extra-curricular activities and informal education, thus complementing the formal academic curriculum.” Thanks to the generous donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the University completed the HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges complex in 2015, offering accommodations for a total of around 1,200 students. Various green facilities are incorporated into the complex, in which bamboo building materials and furniture are extensively used. It was the first student residential complex in Hong Kong to receive the ‘BEAM Plus Platinum’ recognition of the Hong Kong Green Building Council. Four RCs with Distinctive Themes There are four RCs in HSUHK, including Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College, S H Ho Wellness College, Patrick S C Poon Amity College and Fung Yiu King Evergreen College. They were respectively named after their generous donors, namely the Wei Lun Foundation Limited, the S H Ho Foundation Limited, Dr Patrick Poon, and the Fung Yiu King Charitable Foundation Limited. The Naming Ceremony of Patrick S C Poon Amity College was held on 15 January 2020; the Joint Appreciation and Naming Ceremony for the other three RCs was originally scheduled for 12 January 2022, but had to be postponed due to the local Omicron outbreak. Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College 利易海倫博文書院 Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College promotes cultural diversity and attracts exchange students from around the world to be its residents. To cater for students’ needs and maintain a close student-teacher relationship, each RC is co-managed by a live-in team consisting of an RC Master, an Associate Master and Resident Tutors, as well as the Residential Colleges Unit of the Student Affairs Office (SAO). Teachers are also invited to serve as Faculty Fellows. Patrick S C Poon Amity College 潘燊昌樂群書院 Patrick S C Poon Amity College stresses community care, fostering students’ civic engagement through community service and developing their leadership skills to meet the needs of local and global societies. Patrick S C Poon Amity College is a living and learning community that fosters students’ whole person growth with the theme of ‘community connection and service’. Our motto is ‘We Care, We Serve, We are Servant Leaders’. Since the establishment of our first volunteer team in 2017/18, we have organised and taken part in a variety of community services to help the people-in-need in the community, in the hope to bring about a lasting impact on society with our innovative ideas. Dr Thomas Man 萬頴恩博士 Master of Patrick S C Poon Amity College 潘燊昌樂群書院院長 After joining the volunteer team, I have been involved in community service to reach out and help people from different walks of life and learnt that‘to give is better than to receive’. By organising diverse environmental activities and setting sustainable development goals, students can participate in a sustainable living model and young leadership development. From my point of view, an RC has two basic functions: a ‘home away from home’ that provides students with accommodation; and ‘a class after class’ that offers education. Hence, we endeavour to not only provide a safe and cosy living space for residents, but also launch plentiful and interesting educational activities on the theme of sustainable development. Dr Howard Song 宋昭勛博士 Master of Fung Yiu King Evergreen College 馮堯敬綠延書院院長 When serving as a student leader, I helped other schoolmates adapt to the RC life through organising different events. I also worked hard to promote sustainable development, which I hope will flourish. Students farm in the campus. To foster the all-round development of students, the RCs organise various activities for their members to learn from each other, build up social networks, appreciate cultural diversity, enhance self-discipline, cultivate leadership ability, and develop problem-solving skills for coping with real-life challenges. Unlike traditional dormitories or halls, the RCs require their members to participate in their respective College’s activities and services, and to make their own contributions through completing other tasks. Apart from organising their own special activities, the four RCs work hand-in-hand with the SAO to implement a series of educational programmes and scholarship schemes, including the Affiliated Fellowship Scheme, Non-residential Membership Scheme, RC Sustainability Leader Programme and RC Fun Working Programme, to nurture students into becoming leaders in different fields. The four RCs co-organise Joint-RC High Table Dinners, Joint-RC Poon Choi Dinners and The Council Chairman Bowl as well, with a view to enriching students’ learning experiences outside the classroom. Despite the recurrence of the COVID-19 epidemic over the past two years, during which time many RC events had to be switched to other formats, all Colleges, students and teachers were able to maintain interaction and exchange via different channels. The Council Chairman Bowl - Art Jamming Competition. The Council Chairman Bowl - E-sports Competition. Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration. Singing Bowl Workshop. RC Sustainability Leader Programme. High Table Dinners Return after a Two-year Hiatus With the epidemic easing earlier this academic year, High Table Dinners, which had been suspended for two years, were held again in November and early December 2021. Over 480 students took part in this unique traditional college event. To comply with social distancing and other preventive measures, after listening to the keynote speeches and watching the student performances at the Auditorium, residents and guests dined and chatted in small groups. HSUHK Governors cum College Patrons Mr Thomas Liang, Dr Tzu-Leung Ho, Dr Patrick Poon and Dr Patrick Fung each joined one of the four dinners, and Dr Patrick Poon moreover served as a guest speaker and delivered a sharing at the event. Dr Derrick Au, Director of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, was invited to share on how to stay positive in adversity at Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College’s dinner, while on the evening of S H Ho Wellness College’s dinner, Mr Daniel Chan recounted his journey to becoming a bronze medalist in badminton at the Tokyo Paralympics. Dr Patrick Poon told the students of the Patrick S C Poon Amity College about his philosophy and experiences in contributing to society, and Ms Human Ip, writer and artist, related at Fung Yiu King Evergreen College’s dinner her adventures in and passion for nature. Each of these speeches was pertinent to the theme of the respective RC, and the participating students relished listening to the speakers. HSUHK upholds the belief that residential life experience constitutes an important part of co-curricular learning and fosters a creative, collaborative and inclusive teaching and living culture, which enables students to live and learn together and prepare themselves for their future careers. With the new engagement of a Patron, an endowment fund and a Board for each RC, the RC System has reached a new milestone in achieving its mission. Members of the Lee Yick Hoi Lun Mosaic College gather at the High Table Dinner. Mr Daniel Chan shares his experiences at S H Ho Wellness College's dinner. A talented resident embellishes the event of Fung Yiu King Evergreen College with her excellent performance. The interaction between Patrick S C Poon Amity College members is enhanced during the dinner. HSUHK People 恒大人 Transcending Time and Revisiting History – Exploring the Treasures of Bamboo Slips 超越時空看歷史——竹簡尋寶記 Interview with Professor Alex Cheung 張光裕教授專訪 Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Chinese Programme Director of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Chinese Director, The Institute for Chinese Language and Culture Over the long course of Chinese academic history, many ancient books have been passed down from generation to generation, recounting our cultural stories across thousands of years. In recent decades, bamboo manuscripts of the pre-Qin era have gradually made their appearance, giving academia and the public alike the chance and motivation to revisit our history. For years, Professor Alex Cheung, Head of the Department of Chinese, has helped renowned institutions, including the Shanghai Museum and Tsinghua University, in verifying the authenticity of bamboo manuscripts, national treasures from the Warring States period. He was appointed as Honorary Professor by Tsinghua University in 2019 for his outstanding contributions, bringing glory to HSUHK. In the Information Age of the 21st century, the discovery of pre-Qin bamboo manuscripts has renewed public interest in traditional texts. These valuable materials provide references to fill in the voids in our historical records, and could even rectify mistakes that occurred during the copying and transmission of texts, thus opening up new horizons of thought for academia. With the ‘new’ and ‘old’ documents complementing each other, ancient relics are effectively employed to serve the present, bringing about new once-in-a-millennium possibilities. Professor Cheung started studying grammatology in the 1960’s, and then his interests extended to ancient classics and palaeography. Later, he threw himself enthusiastically into the study of bronze vessels and traditional rituals, with a focus on the authentication of bronze inscriptions, which became the topic of his PhD thesis. In the early 1990’s, quite a number of bronze vessels dating back to the Shang and Zhou Dynasties were sighted in the Hong Kong antique market, while traces of pre-Qin bamboo manuscripts also began to materialise. Professor Cheung, who was then on the faculty of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was invited by the Shanghai Museum to serve as their consultant in verifying the authenticity of those cultural relics. Many bronze vessels and bamboo manuscripts were brought into the museum’s collection as a result. In 2008, Tsinghua University requested that he authenticate a batch of bamboo slips, originating from the State of Chu of the Warring States period, which were found circulating in Hong Kong. Subsequently, an alumnus of Tsinghua University bought the manuscripts and took them to Beijing, and the University set up the Research and Conservation Centre for Unearthed Texts to sort and publish the information on the bamboo slips at the pace of a volume per year. The 11th volume of Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts in Tsinghua University was published in 2021. Professor Alex Cheung with his Tsinghua University Honorary Professor appointment certificate. The pre-Qin bamboo manuscripts are significant. While most of the ancient books that have been passed down to this day were compiled and taught by scholars of the Han Dynasty based on the materials that had survived Emperor Qin’s burning of books and burying of scholars, the manuscripts that have re-emerged in recent years were mostly funeral objects that had been buried with the dead for thousands of years, unknown to the world, before surfacing from the dark. Professor Cheung explained that these bamboo documents differ from the versions handed down to our generation; for instance, there are two newly discovered alternative versions for ‘Ziyi’ (literally ‘Black Robes’) of Liji (literally ‘Book of Rites’), namely the version unearthed in an ancient tomb of the Chu era in Guodian, and the one in the Shanghai Museum’s Chu bamboo manuscript collection. The content of some other recovered books might even suffice to alter history as we know it, therefore bringing a great shock to academia. While some of the pre-Qin bamboo manuscripts were scientifically excavated, quite a number of them were scattered across antique markets; the authenticity of the latter is often a matter of controversy, and these rediscovered materials are what Professor Cheung examines. Speaking of the verification work, Professor Cheung smiled and called it a tough task. “The bamboo slips, when first seen in the cultural relics markets, are often covered in mud and water, and have to be cleaned with an ink brush and water, before the characters can be discerned and then manually copied according to their stroke order.” With his experience in studying palaeography, Professor Cheung identifies the authentic and the counterfeit; the marks left by knots and strings are another basis of his verdict, as such traces cannot be faked. The work is tedious, but it also generates novel experiences that can actually be fun. For example, the bamboo slips are soft like noodles when they are taken out of the muddy water, and will curl up if they are exposed to the air for too long; when the terrified Professor Cheung realised this, he promptly put the bamboo slips back into the water and hid them under the bed to prevent them from being damaged by sunlight. He added that the ‘Suan Biao’ (literally ‘Calculation Table’) contained in the Tsinghua bamboo slips was our country’s earliest multiplication table, or nine-nine table. How amazing it is that our current nine-nine table, the predecessor of which already existed in the Warring States period, is still widely recited by primary school kids today. Palaeography has long been regarded as a marginal discipline, and the study of bamboo manuscripts has been labelled a highbrow specialty. Professor Cheung, however, considers Chinese studies broad and profound in nature, with its various disciplines inextricably intertwined. While the verification of bamboo manuscripts is highly specialised, it also requires the support of a wide knowledge base, with palaeography being an essential component. “Like a pyramid, academic pursuits must be broad at its base and sharp at its apex,” and only this pyramid, as Professor Cheung puts it, can point us to the right way for scholarship. Moreover, one must conduct research with rigour and rationality. “You either know it or don’t know it. Don’t pretend to know something that you don’t,” as reckless speculations would hamper academic development. Professor Cheung added that apart from looking at the authentic relics, it would be good for scholars to look at the counterfeit ones too. “See more of the real, and you’ll spot the fake; see more of the fake, and you’ll cherish the real.” Professor Cheung and Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts in Tsinghua University In recent years, excavated ancient books have gained much attention, and the study of bamboo manuscripts has become a prestigious discipline. Top-notch Mainland educational institutions such as Peking University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University and Anhui University have all established dedicated research centres to study pre-Qin bamboo manuscripts. In contrast, Hong Kong lacks skilled hands in palaeography, nor does it have relevant training resources. Training talents indeed takes time, and it is not something that can be done by willpower alone. “If a student wants to engage in research in this area, I would advise them to consider the matter thoroughly.” Professor Cheung said, not without lament, that studying palaeography is a lonely and rough journey, and only those who are full of determination and passion, and preferably not burdened by finances, can persist along the way. Some of the ancient graphs contained in the bamboo manuscripts have yet to be deciphered, and the continued efforts of the younger generations of scholars are needed. Having devoted most of his life to academic research, Professor Cheung now immerses himself in education. He said frankly that education is a kind of giving that might or might not yield returns. When he comes across students with potential, interest and calibre, he would try his best to help them go to the Mainland or Taiwan for exchange programmes or further studies, so as to nurture talents with an aspiration to study Chinese cultural treasures. Professor Cheung is glad that the research and teaching staff members of the Department of Chinese are all young and promising, and can be counted on to work together in fostering the Department’s development and in promoting Chinese culture. As for students, Professor Cheung hopes that they would treasure every study opportunity to learn more about history and culture and to cultivate themselves, so that they could shine in the international arena. “University students must have the ability to think independently, so that they can choose a proper goal to strive for,” he advises students. Eleven years ago, by a touch of serendipity, the retired Professor Cheung joined HSUHK, devoting himself to education and embarking on a new journey with a heart filled with gratitude; eleven years later, he has earned the Tsinghua University Honorary Professor title, which he considers a gift of thanks to HSUHK and another source of his gratitude. Professor Cheung believes that happiness lies in helping others, and finds it truly satisfying to apply his knowledge to help bring back our national treasures in the form of the Warring States bamboo manuscripts; having the chance to be the first to study books unknown to our ancestors, as a bonus, is again a blessing and a great pleasure in life. “As an intellectual, I am tremendously grateful to be able to pursue academic studies in this way,” he said. ‘Jinteng’(‘Metal-bound Coffer’) in the first volume of Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts in Tsinghua University can be collated with the received text included in‘Shangshu’(‘Book of Documents’). Its ‘people-oriented’ content, in addition, is helpful for pursuing different kinds of careers in the future.” And it turns out that he got more than he expected. In class, Ricky had the chance to explore various fields, including international political and economic relations, culture, history and tourism. “To me, the most unforgettable lesson was about the relationship between the Malaysian cuisine laksa and national consciousness. It helped me realise the importance of multi-perspective thinking.” As the Residential Student Leader and the President of the Integrated Wofoo Leaders’ Network, he was always busy organising activities for the students of HSUHK and other institutions after school. Besides, his days of living and learning at Fung Yiu King Evergreen College gave him precious memories. “The professors farmed and cooked with us, and always shared their life experiences, which taught me a lot about how to carry myself in life.” To put what he had learnt into practice, Ricky interned in Shanghai when he was a Year 2 student, collecting data for local shopping malls and analysing the consumption pattern and market trend in each shopping district. “My studies in humanities enabled me to carefully consider customers’ needs from the perspective of cultural awareness, so that I could help make the business operations more comprehensive.” This experience enhanced his interest in international relations and management, and he decided to read an MA in International Public Policy at Fudan University in Shanghai upon graduation, with research on digital governance as his current focus. He was grateful that the education he received at HSUHK had given him a solid foundation in sociology, while meeting HSUHK alumni at Fudan University helped him adapt to his new life in the city. Ricky believes nothing compares with the journey of one’s own feet, so he encourages fellow students to go on exchange in different places. “Don’t limit yourselves to the online world. Get first-hand experience with people and culture, and you will have a deeper and broader outlook on life.” Ricky (left) serves as MC at the high table dinner of the Residential Colleges. Ricky (1st from right) shares at a cross-strait youth summit in Shanghai as a Hong Kong representative. Naming Ceremony of the Yuen Campus HSUHK was deeply honoured to have received a magnanimous donation from Professor Francis Yuen and Dr Rose Lee, in support of the University’s strategic development. In his speech, President Ho presented two approaches to corporate governance, namely the shareholder-based approach which focused on maximising shareholder value (MSV), and the stakeholder-based approach which emphasises optimising values for all stakeholder groups. The latter is considered more sustainable because a corporation, as an important social institution, should fulfil its social contract obligations to balance the interests of different stakeholders. After recommending various reform measures for implementing the stakeholder-based governance model, President Ho concluded that if top management actively engaged in strengthening society’s civic foundation, a more fair, inclusive and sustainable free market economy could be constructed. President Ho Granted 2020 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries The Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries (PVCHK) established the ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ in 2004 to commend professionals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions in their areas of expertise. An immigration wave came about in the 1980’s and 1990’s, when some Hong Kong people decided to emigrate with their families or send their children to study overseas in the face of the uncertainties ahead. Later, having considered the work opportunities in Hong Kong, some of these families chose to return to the city. The children who had emigrated with their parents gradually returned to Hong Kong. Having established their careers and families upon their return, one would think that they would stay permanently; however, some families are considering to say their farewells once again. Dr Lucille Ngan, Associate Professor of the Department of Social Science, who has long been studying migration, race, gender and families, found this phenomenon intriguing, and therefore commenced a research project entitled ‘Trajectories, Strategies, Practices of Second-generation Hong Kong Transnational Families’ in 2019. Dr Ngan remarked that this project is to a certain extent a continuation of a research project she conducted in 2015. “I was researching the fatherhood experience of returnees in Hong Kong, and was surprised to learn that all of the participating families planned to send their children back to the countries where they grew up, or return with their whole family. In the current research project, I examine returnee families’ reasons for leaving Hong Kong again, and the considerations, arrangements and challenges involved in the process. I also wish to understand how they employ local and transnational strategies to realise their plans.” Dr Lucille Ngan. Growing Up in ‘Astronaut Families’ Affects Family Planning 「太空人家庭」成長經歷影響家庭計劃 Dr Ngan’s study centres on second-generation returnee families from Hong Kong that have the intention to leave or have recently departed for the West. This includes those who are relocating part of the family and the whole family unit. In these families, at least one of the parents has dual citizenship. Some of the respondents had lived through a transnational childhood as a ‘parachute kid’ of an ‘astronaut family’, meaning they resided in a foreign city away from one or both of their parents when they were students. Such a background has had an influence on their migration plans for their own families in parenthood. “Some respondents didn’t want their kids to experience the kind of loneliness they went through themselves when they resided alone overseas, apart from their own parents, while some hoped their children would gain more independence by going abroad by themselves. Some felt sandwiched between two generations as they felt obligated to spend more time with their aged parents in Hong Kong, but at the same time they wanted to return to the West for their children. All these factors played a role in their decision on whether to send their kids away, or to depart with the whole family.” Different Considerations in Planning for Children’s Education Dr Ngan also noted in her research that similar to the previous generation, children’s education was one of the respondents’ main reasons for leaving Hong Kong. However, the educational concerns differ between the two generations. Their parents’ generation expected that the acquisition of overseas qualifications would enable their children to have more advantages in the job market, while second generation returnee parents, who have grown up overseas, tend to champion an education model that stresses happy learning and creativity. They hoped that their children could receive this kind of education early on. The dual citizenship of second-generation immigrants gives them an edge in mobility. “My informants expressed that international schools in Hong Kong could also provide a learning environment of a similar kind, but the tuition fee was high. However, as foreign citizens, these parents felt that they could offer their children the same kind of education for a much lower cost in the West. Most families I interviewed were leaving in primary school, in contrast to the past when children tended to leave in high school, prior to university entrance exams.” Giving Up Income in Exchange for Family Life The main aim of emigration is to pursue a better life. To these second-generation returnee parents, they were more motivated by a better lifestyle than better economic opportunities. They were mostly professionals or industry workers with incomes of the middle to upper-middle class, and they already enjoyed more freedom and choices in life in the eyes of the public. Nonetheless, most of the respondents said that the high pressure of living in Hong Kong would easily damage family relationships. Although they made more money in Hong Kong, they could not achieve their desired lifestyle. They believed that even if they worked ten more years, their life would still not really change for the better. They therefore were considering to move and settle permanently overseas with their families, despite the lower chance of upward social mobility and the need to readapt to the local labour market. Further Plans to Study Transnational Families Issues Dr Ngan originally planned to conduct fieldwork in Australia and Canada, but unfortunately because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, overseas interviews had to be conducted online. She was glad that her own background made it easy for her to open up conversations with the respondents. “I am myself a returnee from Australia, and I have children as well. My informants positioned me as someone similar to them, and this worked to my favour as they were willing to share more thoughts with me.” The research project will formally come to a close in June 2022, and Dr Ngan plans to study more issues of transnational families in the future. Scan the QR code to read Dr Ngan's article ‘Transnational Familyhood and Migration Strategies among Parachute Kids- turned-Parents from Hong Kong’, Asian Studies Review (co-authored). https://doi.org/10.1080/10357823.2021.1937939 掃描二維碼閱讀顏博士刊於《亞洲研究評論》的合著文章《跨國家庭關係和香港的「降落傘孩童」成為父母後的移民策略》。 Staying connected while keeping social distance was a unique experience for us during the pandemic.
