Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in ASIAN STUDIES (BSS-AS) 亞洲研究(榮譽)社會科學學士 QF Level: 5 QR Registration No.: 18/000849/L5 Registration Validity Period: 08/11/2018 to 31/08/2021 社會科學系 DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE 香港恒生大學 THE HANG SENG UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Programme Features HOLISTIC STRUCTURE • The programme provides students with fundamental knowledge of social sciences and humanities with respect to issue in the Asian context. • Specific modules are offered by the Department of Social Science. This ensures the linkage and coherence of the modules offered. Student sharing: I took foundation modules on Asian studies, political science and sociology in my first two years of study. In year 3 and 4, I have enrolled in different major electives modules based on my interest and competence. Citing, reading and writing academic articles are essential to learning. While the process of exploring an issue may be time-consuming and demanding, the output and new knowledge acquisition bring me joy and great fulfilment. (Tim Fong, Year 4 student) MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH • The programme provides multi-disciplinary knowledge and training in social science and humanities. • Students are trained to evaluate situations and problems in the Asian context by adopting multi-disciplinary perspectives. Student sharing: My experience in studying Social Sciences in Asian Studies is fulfilling. As Asia stands on the global spotlight, BSS-AS adopts a pragmatic and practical approach in understanding its dynamics and developments. It has been a challenge to study the complexity and uniqueness of Asia, but these characteristics are what make it more fascinating. The programme encouraged learning from multi-disciplinary perspectives, allowing me to critically evaluate issues and current affairs. Personally researching an unfamiliar topic, consulting an expert about it and concluding with your own insight – these are just bits of what make this programme so self-rewarding and worthwhile! (Karli Lo, Year 3 student) OVERSEAS EXPERIENCE • The programme equips students with abilities to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment. • Cross-cultural experience cultivates students' critical thinking, communication skills and respect for cultural diversity. • Through academic exchange, study tour, summer course, voluntary work or placement, students can gain overseas experience in Asia. Student sharing: Working as an intern at the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia was a brand-new experience. My major duties included data collection and updating information about Southeast Asian countries. During the six-week stay in Jakarta, I experienced the power blackout on Java Island when the city became powerless and transport was paralysed. I also witnessed how the Indonesian Government coped with the chaos. (Danny Lam, Year 4 student) ASIAN LANGUAGE TRAINING • The programme requires students to attain at least 6 credits in Japanese, Korean or other Asian language modules. • Students may also take advanced level language modules as electives to enhance their competitiveness in the job market or further study. Student sharing: I joined the summer programme organised by the Chung-Ang University in Korea. I had the Korean class every day and 5 lectures about Korean culture. For the Korean class, I learned a lot since I had many chances to speak and listen to Korean. After joining this programme, my Korean proficiency has increased especially in listening because I listen to Korean every day. Also, I am confident to speak Korean. (Athena Chan, Year 3 student) Overseas Learning Experience The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) offers exchange opportunities for students in BSS-AS at overseas institutions.
