This year, over 1,400 new undergraduate students and exchange students joined HSMC. At the convocation, President Simon S M Ho led all Academic Board members and other academic staff to give a warm welcome to all new students. In his address, President Ho hoped that students would not determine whether a person is successful or not simply by considering his/her academic achievement, income, wealth, fame or power. Instead, it is important to differentiate between “success” and the less tangible “value”. President Ho pointed out, “‘Value’ is to do things which are meaningful and with fulfillment. And when value really clashes with the ‘tangible’ success, I hope many of you would choose value. I think this is the moment when we feel most satisfied and fulfilled. During your study at HSMC, besides gaining professional knowledge and skills, you will have a deeper understanding of yourself and learn to establish your own personal values, so that you can handle your future challenges in work and life confidently.” President Ho also encouraged students to take part in Residential Colleges activities, as well as internship and exchange programmes to find out their own interests and edges, to broaden their horizon and to enhance their learning experience. President Simon Ho welcomed all new students to HSMC. Mr Li Cheung Kuk, President of HSMC Students’ Union, wished all new fellow students a fruitful campus life. (From left) Dr Tom Fong, Professor Y V Hui, President Simon Ho, Provost Gilbert Fong and Professor Scarlet Tso Handa, the mascot of HSMC, met the students during the convocation for photo-taking and fun-filled interaction. Members of the College Sinfonietta performed a piece of music composed by Karl Jenkins. Sharing Fruits with Students and Staff by HSMC Management 恒管管理層與師生分享水果 President Simon S M Ho; Professor Y V Hui, Vice-President (Academic and Research); Dr Tom Fong, Vice-President (Organisational Development); Professor Scarlet Tso, Associate Vice-President (Communications and Public Affairs) and Dr Brossa Wong, College Registrar gave a warm welcome to students on 3 September 2018, the first day of the new academic year. Prior to joining the HSMC family, Professor Tam was the Chair Professor and Dean of Arts and Social Sciences at the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). He was Professor-Reader in English and served various administrative roles at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) before joining the OUHK. Professor Tam is an international leading scholar in Ibsen studies, and is the former Head (2012-18) and currently a member of the International Ibsen Committee, University of Oslo, Norway. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. He has published numerous books and more than a hundred articles on Ibsen, Gao Xingjian, comparative literature, modern drama, Chinese film, and world Englishes. In an interview with HSMC Newsletter, Professor Tam shared with us his experiences and thoughts. Professor Tam’s interests in humanities subjects began at secondary school …… Professor Tam: I loved and did well in science subjects at secondary school, such as biology, physics and mathematics. Asked what made me interest in humanities subjects, I would say that social and cultural movements in different parts of the world in the 1970s had played a part in the formative years of my youth. Besides, our school encouraged students to take part in social services and to study art and literature. That was how I got interested in philosophy, ideology, culture and art. I majored in English and minored in fine arts while studying for a BA (Hons) degree at CUHK. Eager to learn, I sat in many different classes such as Chinese literature, history, philosophy, sociology and political science. I am particularly interested in the ideologies and philosophies behind literature and art. The more I learned, the better I understood the interconnectedness between different fields and began to form my own ideas. This certainly has broadened my view and made me more sensitive to new and emerging trends in global cultural developments. Professor Tam’s study on Henrik Ibsen reveals the profound influences brought by this renowned Norwegian playwright …… Professor Tam: I have pioneered a sub-field of Ibsen studies, that is, Ibsen’s impact in China over the past one hundred years. The modern Chinese concepts of an individual self, women’s independence, anti-corruption, environment protection all came from Ibsen when he was introduced to China by Hu Shi, Lu Xun, Ba Jin, Mao Dun and many, many other writers and critics as a social reformer and an innovative dramatist during the May 4th era and the 1930s. Even today, Ibsen is frequently performed in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Taipei with visions that bear new messages on feminism and on the relation between power and the self. Ibsen’s significance lies in his plays being taken as models for the modern Chinese stage, which has become a very important part of modern Chinese culture and Chinese social life. Professor Tam finds HSMC an ideal place to promote liberal arts education and enable transformation …… Professor Tam: Liberal arts education is successfully implemented in many small but excellent universities and colleges, especially in the United States. It aims at transforming students by liberating their creative potentials and broadening their knowledge base so that they have the skill sets for tackling problems in a changing world. I believe university education should not solely aim at providing training for single jobs. The transformation process is equally important, for it can bring students to a higher level of intellectual sophistication and critical judgement. HSMC’s efforts in promoting liberal arts education deserve our applause. With a small number of students, our academic staff can establish closer relationships with students and focus on their all-round development. In an environment that values close human relationships, students can learn from their professors and peers and develop friendship and intellectual companionship. Professor Tam believes SHSS has great development potential …… Professor Tam: SHSS has succeeded in achieving academic excellence and surely has new development opportunities. For instance, art and music can be more widely promoted, not only in enhancing students’ abilities to appreciate art and music, but also in cultivating critical discernment in understanding the historical and socio-political factors that produce different forms of art. Students have to learn many different subjects and skills throughout their years in an undergraduate programme, but the most important is to grasp the principles and patterns that are at work behind different forms of manifestation. Our world can be understood in abstract terms, in philosophical ideas, in mathematical numbers, or in visual images. The wide application of digital technologies, especially in cultural production, has brought about changes in cultural consumption, art presentation, communication and education. We are facing a new generation of students who grow up in a world of animated images and visualisation. They do not rely on language and mathematical numbers to understand the world. They are not satisfied with simply “understanding” the world. Instead, they seek participation and interaction, and becoming part of the process. Liberal arts education in the digital age has to take into consideration how “visual agency” and “visual thinking” can be developed in students. With students nowadays being called “netizens” and “digital natives”, we the teachers have to re-conceptualise teaching in response to a changing world being digitised and an economy giving rise to creative industries. Professor Tam is grateful to his teachers at CUHK and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for having taught him and inspired him to the world of scholarly work. He is wide-read in many subjects because of the valuable opportunities availed to him in discovering rare materials collected at the libraries of CUHK and of UIUC. His interest in Ibsen all began with the journal New Youth, in which he saw a special issue on “Ibsenism” (published in 1918) when one day he was browsing the book stacks at the CUHK Library. At UIUC where he received his PhD and MA in Comparative Literature, Professor Tam had the opportunity to come into contact with rare books and journals that were not available anywhere in the world. The UIUC Library was the third largest university library in the US and had more than 10 million volumes of books at the time when he was a graduate student there. He also studied library and information science at UIUC, which led him to a new world of scholarly discoveries and form his own research agenda. Sharing by Alumni 校友分享 Master of Life Pioneer in Profession Mr Poon To Leung, Kevin Alumnus of Hang Seng School of Commerce While working at one of the Hong Kong Observatory’s sites near Tate’s Cairn, Mr Poon To Leung, Kevin was already attracted by the construction of Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) when looking at the site from mountain top. He made a decision to return to school and had the privilege to become one of HSSC’s second cohort of Diploma in Business Studies graduates in 1983. He described this as a turning point of his life and career. Mr Poon recalled, “I was eager to seek room for academic enhancement. Prior to studying at HSSC, I had been working for five years after secondary school. Without the fantastic experience at HSSC, I would not have led a new career path in the past few decades.” Being young, Mr Poon enjoyed the luxury of pursuing new direction in life. He remembered how extremely hard he studied to make up for the five-year gap. He was not a bookworm but made the best out of his campus life; living in the dormitory, leading the Putonghua Club as Chairman and connecting closely with teachers and schoolmates. In one occasion he suffered from a serious stomach ache, a senior lecturer who taught him Chinese took care of him at the hospital throughout the night. He was very thankful for the teacher’s kindness. His first lesson on computing began at HSSC. This paved the way for his new career direction. “At HSSC, we not only acquired classroom knowledge, but also valuable calibres such as fast and effective learning abilities, adaptability, resilience and organisational skills. With a more positive mindset, I dared to meet challenges. In selecting my profession, I chose the up-and-coming ones instead of the so-called sunset industries,” shared Mr Poon. Thus, the information technology industry turned out to be his cup of tea. Mr Poon thought he was fortunate to have caught the wave in his career development – beginning from computer peripherals, to background network infrastructure and network security. “I am glad to have moved forward with this fast-paced industry which transforms itself every day. As a matter of fact, the booming of trade and communication technologies in mainland China since the 1980s had provided many opportunities.” Before retirement, Mr Poon was executive director in the Greater China region of a US information technology company. He thinks that occasional success or failure does not define a person but the ways to handle them do. This is a belief he upholds throughout his career path. Actively supporting the Alumni Association of HSMC and HSSC (AA) as one of its Committee Members, Mr Poon hopes that he can follow the footsteps of AA founders and make contributions to the College where he had taken something precious and beneficial. To conclude his sharing, Mr Poon pointed out that apart from career planning, it is advisable to also have planning in different areas such as relationships with family and friends, health and investment to make one’s life complete. Mr Kevin Poon was awarded a testimonial at the graduation ceremony of HSSC. Mr and Mrs Poon visited HSMC campus. Love What You Choose to Stay Passionate Ms Lai Oi Mei, Stephanie Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours), HSMC Project Executive, Sportsart Limited Though only a short chat, the enthusiasm and energy of Ms Lai Oi Mei, Stephanie could be felt over the phone. As the first cohort of graduates of the Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours) (BJC) Programme in 2013, Stephanie witnessed the College’s transition from Hang Seng School of Commerce to HSMC. Her study here lasted for five years, from pre-associate degree, associate degree to bachelor’s degree. She is glad to grow with the College, “The College’s transformation to a university-level institution is significant, providing us with more opportunities and better resources.” Stephanie treasures her study at HSMC and shared, “Our teachers gave valuable support, from academic to career. As a BJC student, I learned about some state-of-the-art facilities and equipment such as the TV studio and the TV Lab. We thus know better how the industry actually runs. Through practice and hands-on experience during our study, we can easily adapt to the workplace.” Stephanie’s study in communication also enabled her to acquire skills in issue and crisis management. Now a project executive at a company specialising in organising sports competitions, she finds such skills highly useful in a fast-paced workplace like hers, “The programme equipped me not only with theories, but also the ability to think out of the box. I understand I can try every possible means to solve problems efficiently and effectively.” Stephanie believes communication is the key no matter at work or anywhere else. “Whenever I run into problems, I talk to my boss and colleagues. Employers at large, I suppose, welcome new ideas and suggestions from the younger generation. Therefore, don’t be shy to express views, no matter they are taken or not as this may generate new ideas and thoughts.” Stephanie thinks that positive attitude and passion are essential for a successful career path. “Working long and irregular hours may be stressful. Still I find challenging and interesting elements in my job,” smiled Stephanie. She had joined HSMC’s basketball team for three years and now she manages to take up a sports-related task. Combining hobbies with career is a key for one to stay passionate. Stephanie hopes that HSMC students will grasp every opportunity to join internship and exchange programmes. “I wish I had such chances during my study. I believe overseas experience can help change myself for the better by learning from different cultures and peoples.” Stephanie (1st from right, middle row) at graduation ceremony 黎靄微 ( 中排右一 ) 畢業禮留影 Busy at work 忙於工作 Campus News 校園消息 HSMC Fintech Symposium 2018: Disruptive Innovation in Financial Services 「金融科技 – 顛覆與創新」研討會 The Department of Economics and Finance, with support from the Executive Development Centre and the Research Institute for Business, hosted the HSMC Fintech Symposium 2018: Disruptive Innovation in Financial Services on 10 August 2018, which attracted more than 200 participants to discuss and exchange intellectual ideas on this game changer. In the study authored by Dr Collin Wong, Dr Helen Ma and Professor Lawrence Leung from the Policy Research Institute of Global Supply Chain, an optimisation-simulation model on the level of Inter-Terminal Transfers (ITT) was run, using a month of real-time data on vessel flow at KTCTs in 2017. Six scenarios with different levels of transhipment volume were devised, and the volumes of ITT with and without collaboration were measured. Results of the simulation indicated that with collaboration, the total number of ITT, the ITT-related costs to shipping lines, and the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions from ITT could be cut by 49%, 49% and 40% respectively. The study also showed that operation efficiency of the container terminal would be improved with collaboration. An estimated 291,044 unnecessary ITT round-trips per annum could be eliminated. Based on an average ITT cost of HK$300 per container, shipping lines could save HK$88 million per year. He shared his views on nurturing talents to cope with the fast development of financial technology. President Ho pointed out, “Hong Kong should be well-positioned to be a global leader in fintech. However, there have been relatively few graduates who are conversant with finance, digital technology and humanities. In recent years, there have been a few local universities offering fintech degree programmes. The Management Science and Information Management, and the Applied and Human-Centred Computing programmes at HSMC not only provide students with needed technical knowledge including AI, big data analytics, blockchain, cloud computing and cybersecurity, but also analytical skills, creativity, business operations and human aspects of computing.” He added that technology is a global development and suggested people to change their ways of thinking and look at technology from a much wider societal and humanity perspective. The FINWISE Summit is one of the most influential fintech and blockchain events. By bringing together top talents, industry elites and excellent enterprises, it aims at strengthening communications among blockchain-related practitioners and promoting the development of global financial technology. President Simon Ho shared his views at the panel discussion session. HSMC Achieved Highest Number of RGC-Funded Projects and Success Rate among Eligible Institutions For 2018/2019, the Research Grants Council (RGC) has approved HK$38 million for a total of 47 projects. Speaking on the topic “MLA: Reality and Challenges”, President Ho shared, “Most senior executives in most organisations are very well-intented, but there is the capability in any company to go wrong, particularly in a world that promotes the wrong concepts of maximising short-term shareholders’ returns.” To reduce corporate mis-behaviours and to enhance sustainable competitiveness, President Ho strongly advocates the stakeholder approach to corporate governance, arguing that the sole social responsibility of a company is to create value for its stakeholders. Conflicts among stakeholder groups could be resolved by adopting the MLA philosophy. DAHK has been a partner of HSMC since June 2017 to promote the philosophy of MLA. In the past two years, different MLA events were organised by HSMC to enlighten its students, management scholars and executives on this initiative for creating values for stakeholders. President Simon Ho delivered a keynote speech at DAHK’s MLA Workshop. Three non-official members of the Executive Council, the Honourable Tong Ka Wah, Ronny; the Honourable Ip Kwok Him and the Honourable Lam Kin Fung, Jeffrey visited HSMC on 12, 21 and 28 September 2018 respectively.
