The need for businesses to both exploit and explore their internal and external processes heightens when business environment becomes uncertain and volatile. This presages businesses can no longer rely on traditional process management approach for sustainability and competitive advantage.


To this end, this module aims at introducing students to the theories, principles and techniques of process improvement and innovation. Drawing upon the perspective of organizational theories including organizational change, resource-base view and neo-institutionalism, this module will guide students to delve into different process change paradigms and the necessary change management strategies and practices, and to understand their impact on businesses. To equip students with the state-of-art process knowledge, this module will also demonstrate the use of different process analysis and mapping techniques that are critical to the implementation of process change. Finally, the students are required to apply these acquired knowledge and skills by rigorously scrutinizing real case studies that are integral parts of this module.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. analyze business processes to identify process bottlenecks;


  2. describe the nature and illustrate the characteristics of different process improvements and innovation paradigms;


  3. differentiate and evaluate the process and organization of implementing process improvement and innovation; and


  4. generate and assess feasible changes to problematic processes with the facilitation of proper change management strategy.
