This module aims at providing students with the basics of the history of economic ideas in the evolution of the theory of value since Adam Smith. Accordingly, the rise of macroeconomics and major schools of thought are studied, which sets the stage for the discussion on the methodology of economics. Students are guided to explore to what extent scientific methods can help to differentiate conflicting schools of economic thoughts and theories.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
- describe the historical background from which economic theories were born;
- identify and explain the major differences among the economic theories from different historical periods covered;
- identify and evaluate the differences between verification and falsification of economic theories; and
- identify and evaluate the scientific methods in economics.
